Paid or free, do you have any resources about this?

Nothing seems to be clear about it, besides that having a Google News account and authority. But there are many bad sites featured there that make think that there should be other way to incentive Google to promote our site.

What you think?

This resource should help you: https://detailed.com/top-stories/

Here are the key takeaways from the article (Summarized by LLAMA AI):
  1. Top Stories SERP feature is dominated by a few large media brands: The top 1,000 domains in the Top Stories feature are dominated by 5 large media brands, with Gannett, Nexstar, Hearst, Vox Media, and Tegna controlling 18.8% of the top 1,000 sites.
  2. Independent sites can perform well: Despite the dominance of large media brands, independent sites can still perform well in the Top Stories feature, with 147 independent sites making it to the top 1,000.
  3. Young sites can also succeed: Some young sites, such as Escape Collective, On3, and Democracy Docket, have been able to succeed in the Top Stories feature despite being less than 3 years old.
  4. PR Newswire and OpenPR can help smaller sites get featured: PR Newswire and OpenPR, press release distribution services, can help smaller sites get featured in the Top Stories feature, but it may not be a cost-effective strategy.
  5. Yahoo's dominance in Top Stories is a controversy: Yahoo's dominance in the Top Stories feature is a controversy, as many of its rankings are for articles created by sites they syndicate content from, and the canonical tag seems to have little impact on hindering Yahoo from ranking.
  6. Cox Media blocks visitors from outside the US: Cox Media is the only media brand that blocks visitors from outside the US, which may limit their global reach.
  7. Most top sites use.com domain extension: 890 of the top 1,000 sites use the.com domain extension, with only 3 of the top 100 domains using a different extension.
  8. BLOX CMS and Newspack are popular CMS options for news sites: BLOX CMS and Newspack, created by WordPress.com and funded by Google, are popular CMS options for news sites, with many top sites using these platforms.

Great, but do we know what "work well" means for this case? Based on theory there are many websites that shouldn't be in top stories because they offer, for example, horrible experience full of ads.
