Most cheapest method to start a blog

Hello BHW community,
I have been thinking to start a blog since a log time.
I'm a programmer and I want to start a blog about the programming.

My aim is not to monitze the blog yet or get a lot of traffic etc to my blog but I just wanna start it.
Since, I'm not planning on writing it daily and not planning to make money out of it so I don't wanna spend much on it.
I want to know the cheapest possible option for me.

If you want to keep costs as low as possible, starting with a free platform. If you want more control and flexibility in the future, investing in a self-hosted WordPress site or a static site generator hosted on GitHub Pages can be very affordable.

Github pages seems like a very good option but is there an easy option to write on github pages?
And can I connect my custom domain name later on somehow?

WordPress is great, has awesome free themes, and you can do a lot with free plugins. Depends on your needs, but researching free options first is smart before buying anything. Also, ChatGPT can help with CSS, JavaScript, etc., if you want to customize stuff!

Except for cheap Domain providers.
Better watch on: http://www.tld-list.com
You can enter the Domain name with tld (.com, for example)
Then, pick a good Domain Registrar, Porkbun, Spaceship (which belongs to Namecheap as far as I remember), and a few others that are good.
There are also other good Registrars. My favorite for my Portfolio is Dynadot, but they are a bit expensive for a simple blog.
Nevertheless, all of them have regulary some Deals / Coupons for specific TLDs, so always watch out =)

Yep, connecting a custom domain later is also a simple process, giving you the flexibility to start small and grow as you develop your blog. And also it allows for a straightforward writing process using Markdown.

You can use hashnode, substack etc. Those are programmer friendly.

Another option is https://dev.to/ it's for software developers. It's not exactly a blogging platform but you can create your own page there and publish articles.

Remember to also think long-term. You may put all the effort now but when you have some money, you now realise that you may not be able to get your blog to stand alone. So be careful what you decide to choose now. Make sure you can get it to stand alone in future

Medium is the best platform for blogging currently among all the free ones just because it ranks and drives organic traffic easily.

I'm a programmer and I want to start a blog about the programming.

Purchase a domain.
Goto Host koala get their cheapest 5$/Year hosting plan.
Then Setup your WordPress website and start blogging there with your own domain.

Personally, as a programmer I would setup my own website and also a medium blog.
Showcase my portfolio on website and link the blog to medium blog.
Also, as programmer you should have a GitHub profile & maybe a LinkedIn too.

You might go with free options like blogger but most probably you need this blog for professional reasons, in which case spending $12 will be a reasonable choice. You can buy a WordPress hosting from Ionos for $12 for the first year (with a free .com domain included)

Buy a domain and hosting in offer and start it. Do not just keep thinking about it, it is pure time waste.

I suggest you choose wordpress.com, or Github blog, or self host a wordpress website, which first year, within $30, then renewal $50 per year after that, but you can host up to 3 websites on it, cheap and enough.

I remember reading years ago that your own domain was the best thing because you owned it, and it was not someone else's property. Then went and bought around 100 domains most of which got nowhere and discarded after a few years. It was a waste of money. If I had used blogger, it would have been much better as it was 1) free, and 2) back in the day Google used to give it preference when it came to ranking. People have good intentions thinking "long term" but often many projects go nowhere.
