I'm competing against Abcnews.com for a particular keyword. I'm #6 and they're #1, but they don't have a lot of backlinks. I've been trying to rank for this keyword for about a month. They're not in a slot for a news feed, it's just the page that's ranked...any suggestions?

IT comes down to a number of factors with a site like abcnews, as they are an established authority sites, as well as have current updating content nearly on every page of their site. Without knowing the keyword, it is hard to say what exactly is going on but I'd bet that they are in the top result due to the fact that the page is of an article, interview or report that they did on the subject of the keyword in question.

Google is all about gathering and distributing solid information. ABCnews is all about finding the ultimate information results and presenting them, therefore, super authority in a super position. You are going to have to really go head to head with them, as backlinks simply aren't going to cut it in this case. You are going to have to make your site an authority to even touch them, much less out rank them.

my suggestion stop competing with them it's no used they are authority site

It could be possible but it would be very very hard work to beat them. Just like another person here has mentioned, I think it would be very difficult to keep up with their content generation. Google will always give them some bias as well as they are an authority site that thousands of people link to voluntarily. Their strength will grow organically with time unless they really mess things up for themselves.

They probably haven't been aggressive with their backlinking because they might feel that they don't really need it. Do you have market samurai?

If yes, run up a SEO competition analysis to see what you are up against. Remember, you still have 4 spots between your and ABC that you need to beat as well.

Best of luck with whatever you do.

Hi, considering the fact that they are an authority website, it will be hard to beat. But nothing is impossible !! Where this is will, there is a way.
Work hard on SEO, perhaps hire more than 2 web marketing companies to do the work for you. Maybe u'll get lucky !!;)

As everyone else says, it's not likely you're going to beat them. Ther better question is why do you care? Even if ABCNews is in the number 2 spot behind you, more people are still going to click on their site. Once you get into the top 5 positions, you should start looking more at tweaking your title and description to entice people to click on your link. If you're #1 and they're #2, or vice versa both links are getting looked at. If people looking for information are offered a choice of looking at Joe's Really Cool Website or ABC News Website, most people are going to consider ABCNews to be the more informative site. Try to make your description and title grab their attention more, make it look more relevant and you'll see a difference in your visitor count. That's what you're really wanting to do anyway.

That's probably about the best you'll be able to do.

ABCNews has Trust on their side, and probably a healthy dose of Topical Authority.

They're not impossible to beat, but it's tough. Build relevant links(from ABCNews if you can...), and build links from trusted sources.

With that in mind though, ask yourself if beating them is necessary... dig into the mindset of your audience based on this keyword. If they keyword comes with a strong buying intent, just make sure you're within the Golden Triangle and try to set your title and snippet to offer a strong call to action.

Same idea applies even if the keyword brings in an info seeker/review hunter audience... get as close to you can to the Golden Triangle, and try to make your listing have a strong call to action.

Also consider competing for mindshare. If it's economical, try to get an "exact" PPC listing for the query... They'll see ABCNews once, and you twice.

Surely mate you can get it there.... just do not give up. remember even they were at your place once.... make us proud and get on there

Hey thanks. That's really refreshing. :) My site is definitely much more relevant and interesting than th AbcNews site. It's tailored to a REALLY TARGETED niche. These people that search for this keyword are not really the Abcnews types... I beat Amazon in a different niche, and it still ranks #1 OVER Amazon, so why can't I beat ABC?? :P

Go for it.

If you have a hard time, then just use parasite hosts to break through until you do get there.

Let us know how it goes!

This is what I was going to suggest, but someone beat me to it. Anyways, good luck man.

Cool. Thanks for the encouragement. I'm working on the parasite thing...but alas, it does take time. :) I'll give it another month or so and see how it goes. Will keep everyone updated!

Hey folks...just wanted to give an update... I'm now at #5 (instead of #6) for my keyword in the US. Here's what my rank looks like so far for english speaking countries:

Google UK: Position #3
Google India: #1
Google Canada: #2
Google Australia: #3
Google USA: #5

Here's what my competition looks like on page one:

1) abcnews
2) msn.com
3) IMAGE SLOT
4) VIDEO SLOT
5) ME!! :)

Trying some other techniques to move up the ladder a bit...anyone have any ideas as to how I can get the Video and/or Image slots??

Create some images and some youtube videos that are optimized to your keyword :) Social bookmark them or something and you're set.

Keep building links for your site though.

Hmm... maybe a good time to do that parasite hosting and include your images and videos in those. Kill two birds.

I've been doing the parasite stuff but mostly to drive traffic. Some of them banned me right off the bat for "promoting" my site. Others de-ranked it, and I had to build other links to compensate for the de-rank. I didn't consider the vids and images on parasites though. Thanks for the tip! :D

You're welcome. Just make sure to show us the result, and also the steps you took to take those positions. Not really hard, but I know some would just like to see it nonetheless.

I'm at #2 in the USA now, should be beating ABCnews anytime now. MSN was in slote #2 that I took over. :) All I did was use the parasite sites like Gemini suggested. I looked for blogs/forums with my keyword in the title and placed my link there if I could. Pinged the page I placed the link on... and then of course scattered a couple of PR 7-9 d0f0llw links. I'm pretty jazzed! :wiggle: Thanks for the help from those who offered advice.

Excellent! Being at #2 you should start to see some increase in that traffic too. Good job.
