Anyone remember stumbleupon?

Back in the early 2000s, when link building was easy and cheap, there were many sites jumping at the chance to be the next big spam target. This is when Stumbleupon came around to bless us with a home from home to get free traffic and backlinks.

I haven't thought about this site for such a long time. Does anyone know when it died? SU was such a big site it even made it into my first automated link building software, about 15 years ago (maybe more). There were tools made specifically to gain the system of this website in the way there are dedicated tools for social media sites now, but it didn't seem nearly as common back then.

Is there anything like SU that would invade your privacy in return for a bit of traffic to your site? Would there be a call for such a site now?

It seems the major SM sites kinda fill this role now but none of them have the same sort of setup. Anyone fancy creating one?

Haha, I know. I was going through some old code from more than a decade ago and came across something I hadn't thought of for years and it was a poster for SU lol

You remember the app that would allow you to share stumbles with other users to boost your site up the ranks. I think it was called StumbleExchange.

Yeah man, there was a poster in my app for del.icio.us as well lol. It could have been good if I was a more experienced dev back then lol.

I don't remember what was unique about deli though, do you remember what it's secret sauce thing was?

Edit: I just looked and apparently it didn't have a deli poster in it's latest update (from 2002 lol), my memory is slightly bugged lol

Used it to send some traffic back in the day. I think they sold and rebranded to something else.

Social media platforms today are too strict unlike before. It doesn't take much they'd deactivate your account or worse block your domain.

Yeah, I think Yahoo bought them, maybe that was MySpace. It was crazy back then, sites getting bought up and sold on all over.

But yeah you are right, the internet on the whole was much more open and fun back then. I don't know if it's because I'm getting old but things were much simpler, easier and more fun/exciting back then.

They screwed up big time by making changes that users didn't want and not employing paid staff to moderate the community and relied on volunteer Reddit type mods who were cliquey.
Then they started Mix

The other site I really liked was Last.FM

Both sites should have been huge but were mismanaged and failed to reach their full potential IMO.

SU seemed like a really big deal at one point but it just disappeared one day. I didn't know it had eventually become mix.

I wonder why they never redirected the SU domain to mix after they switched. Weird.

Sites like that can't exist nowadays because of people like us...

I almost guarantee nobody on here has ever used the tool I am referring to. I think I had about 10 users of it in total lol. At the time I was focused on making tools for myself rather than for selling. This was before No Hands SEO which was my first money maker.

It was a social bookmarking site. Many clones cropped up after that. There was another popular link aggregator website called Digg.

Simpler times, arguably much easier to make some quick money back then. There sure were a lot of opportunities opening up everywhere.
