Most SEO tools measure keyword difficulty (KD) of a keyword based on the number of referring domains of top search results.

However, when it comes to authority websites, it's not necessary to consider KD as an important metric.

We are in 2024 now, and Google has changed a lot. Now, it is time to focus on Search intent and Topical authority.

But it's fine to consider KD, if you're starting an SEO game and want to choose keywords for new websites.

Do you still consider KD for your website content strategy?

ofc you should, you won't rank a new/weak website just because your content matches the search intent and have topical authority,
the website authority is the #1 factor and it has been the case for years, and authority is based primarely on links,
that's simply what parasites all about, the same reason why people are investing in links

Keyword difficulty remains useful for assessing competition, especially for new websites selecting keywords, but focusing on search intent and building topical authority is now more crucial due to changes in Google’s algorithms.

I agree that we need to choose low KD keywords for new/weak websites. But I am talking about well-established websites, they no longer have to consider KD as a primary metrics

Thanks for sharing your inputs!

I check KD with mozbar manually to look for any result(s) in the SERPs with low DA/ PA to outrank them with better content and some backlinks.

Its a nice strategy to follow. But do you think Moz is better than Ahrefs for Keywords?

My first choice of tool is always Ahrefs

Ahrefs doesn't have Mozbar like Chrome Extension just yet.

That is why I prefer Mozbar.

Otherwise I agree with you.

Ahrefs is anyday better than Moz metrics.

authority is relative,
if some authority website want to secure the top postitions for certain hihly competitive keywords, it still need to consider the keyword diffuculty,
it won't simply get and keep #1-3 position(s) just by creating a post/page, it should drive more authority to this page by using internal/external links,
they'll probably rank for any easy-medium competition keywords for the sake of their overall & topical authority, but not as easy for the main keywords

KD can still be useful especially for new websites. But in 2024, focusing on search intent and building topical authority is more important for long-term SEO success.

I never paid attention to KD even when it was more relevant.

You have to review the results manually and use your judgment.

Without checking the Keywords difficulty we are not going to start the work

I agree. One metric can only go so far, and on average KD can work pretty well.
But if you have time, doing what @tiiberius said, judging the SERPs and check for search intent, topical authority, etc. is even better.

A healthy mix I find is best.

Google is smart and can piece together keywords based on topics but having a few complete keywords scattered doesn't hurt. I've done
well with low keyword density.

Yes, i do. But you have to vet them manually no matter what

KD always relevant in SEO.

Yes I'm still considering KD for my website content strategy because it says a lot about how hard I need to try to produce results.

KD is still useful for new websites, but I now prioritize search intent and topical authority for long-term success. Google has evolved, so it’s more about creating content that aligns with user intent.
