Creating this thread in hopes to stir up some discussion about roblox game dev.

I've made games in the past and am currently working on a game, i've got a background in software engineering and am pretty capable when it comes to games development.

My hopes for this thread is to discuss roblox game dev maybe hear some success stories or share advice and ideas and maybe even find someone to work with.

Why not gadot, much better engine.

Well I guess I see the appeal, Roblox could be referred to as bhw with its marketplace.

while godot is a great game engine it doesn't offer the same lucrative possibilities, in roblox the most basic incremental, simulator, rng games are raking it in each month and have between 100's and 1000's of players.

obviously there's the downsides to this im pretty certain roblox only pays back their developers something like 30% of the revenue they make from their games but when you consider how easy everything is and how it's all setup for you it's not a bad trade-off.

Also interested in this topic, but it's not related to dev but game advertising. Does anyone here know a good way to advertise so that children can know and play their games?

this is something we've been trying to figure out, we've ran an ads campaign and done bits around discord and twitter but it is really difficult getting players organically.

one method I've used before is to friend players who join our game or friend players from other games and then use roblox's invite-friend feature to get a couple players on.

Have you had any luck?
I've thought about it, but there are so many games on Roblox, not to mention the huge cut Roblox takes, is it worth the time that would need to be invested to create a decent game that may or may not get players? Even if it gets players, majority of them don't spend any money.

my kids love Roblox and they spent lots of (my) money on it over the years. It’s a very popular platform. Good luck if you do develop a game on the platform.

Roblox game dev has huge potential, especially if you have a software engineering background. Success comes from unique gameplay, solid monetization, and keeping players engaged.

Uh, you do realize Roblox devs actually have to be creative, right? Godot hands you tools, but Roblox forces real problem-solving. For fuck's sake we write our own math libraries and physics extensions just to push the engine further. Yet we still get builtin multiplayer, databases, monetization, and a massive player base, while Godot devs don't get any of that. They act like they’re using a “pro” engine, but they’re just relying on pre-made systems while we’re engineering real solutions AND making more money doing it. But sure, keep telling yourself "Godot is better."

As we speak, Dead Rails has 400k players online and is making 100 MILLION FUCKING DOLLARS PER YEAR
