your first examples are actually link wheels and the 2nd is link exchanges,
exchange actually referrers to 2 ways, in & out, so there are several ways to do so with 3 websites,

idk what OP is referring to,
but if it's the case, he's simply getting the name from someone giving out new or wrong names

It's simple, a 3-way link exchange involves three website linking to each other. Example: Website 1 links to website 2, Website 2 links to Website 3, and Website 3 links to website 1. In a way these create a circular link exchange.

Whereas a 2-way link exchange involves two websites linking to each other. Example: Website 1 links to Website 2, and Website 2 links to Website 1.

It's important to note that both the 2-way and 3-way link exchange are generally discouraged by the search engines.
