AMD Ryzen 5 4500 vs Intel Xeon E5-2680 v4 [For a Working PC]

I am upgrading my working PC, this is NOT for a business nor for gaming purposes. I just love fast PC.

I am also NOT a graphic designer but need to run window apps that require a decent amount of resources.

Right now I am debating between 2 offers and the main difference between them is the processor.

One is an AMD Ryzen 5 4500 and the other is an Intel Xeon E5-2680 v4.

I have benchmarked both (CPU Benchmark) and the Xeon is slightly ahead:
  • Cores: 6 vs 14
  • Threads: 12 vs 28
But what keeps me from choosing the Xeon is that it was launched 8+ years ago and is set as a Server CPU.

If you had to choose between those 2 given the information provided here, which would you choose? Also, is there a better alternative around that same price range?

Waooo, according to that benchmark website the AMD Ryzen 5 3600 is better than the 4500 and on par with the Xeon.

I am leaning towards the Xeon more and more because of the fact it has 14 cores and 28 threads but its class says it's for Servers so don´t know if it would be ideal to use on a desktop.
 
I personally using e5-2670 v2, 10 core 20 thread, with 32gb ram, 4gb rx 580. it's enough for my android automation running 10 client.

Due my limited budget, it only cost me around 400$ for build it, since ryzen 5 3600 cost more than 600$.

Yeah this new PC upgrade it´s very similar to yours and it will cost me around $500 but, debating between which processor should I pick :D

Depends what you need:
-intel 10th gen have Quick Sync allows you to fast process video, similar to Apple M1 but xeon don't have integrated card, so forget about it
-ryzen are good if you don't need to process videos any more

Don't forget Ryzen is AM4 and AMD is still releasing new CPUs for AM4
Also consider AM5 if you have enough budget, because DDR5

Don’t get the Xeon.

First of all, the Xeon is as old as Jesus himself. It won’t be receiving any updates anymore.

It has a TDP of 120W which is twice what the 3600 has. It only supports ram to a maximum speed of 2400MHz DDR4.
And it also requires some very obscure motherboard.

Server CPUs are server CPUs for a reason. They don’t necessarily work too well on personal computers.

Go with either of the Ryzens. Though, I would recommend you to buy a pre-owned Ryzen 5 3600.

It also allows you for much more upgradeable PC configuration for anu future changes.
 
Don't buy server CPU for personal PC. Ditch Xeon.
Pick Ryzen or other intel personal CPUs.
 
Go with ryzen or coose a decent Intel processor with loads of ram instead ov the xeon.

I5 9600kf with 32Gb ram works blazing fast for me.

9th & 10th gen Intel processors are available at good prices and their performance will be enough for your needs.
 
It's better to have more computers with less power than one powerful computer.

It's cheaper.
It's faster.
It's more powerful.
You can split responsibility better.

For instance, there is a way to get a computer with 4 cpu cores for $10.

And then so for $1000 that'd be $1000 / $10 = 100 cpus which is 400 cores.

The energy is just extracts from nuclear stuff. Which can be easily done as well if you got basic insight to organic chemistry.

Sometimes we need to run apps and programs that consume more resources.

For example running llm's locally consumes a lot of resources.
100 cpus which is 400 cores.
Not an ideal setup for personal use.
Managing 5 devices personally was always a headache so I just sold 2 of my desktop part by part.

That's illegal here. I have LLMs in cloud. Colab, AWS, GCloud. All that stuff provides those features.

I'd buy 600 cores cpu for rendering of video. That's the only valid use case in my civilization.

If there's no such CPU, time to... create one. So I invented my own CPU with 600 cores (impractical number).

Much better than either one of those and you can usually get them for under $50 pre-owned.

There’s nothing wrong with purchasing lower end CPUs pre-owned as long as none of the pins are bent.
Using the same on my build, got it for $100 around 2 years ago, its a pretty nice CPU

XEON's only good for multi-threaded tasks, and primarily for running servers or handling lots of queries


Ryzen's got much better single core performance and its gonna matter so much on a lot of every day tasks and also long term usability!

I've got the 3600, paired it with a v v outdated GPU, but still giving me good performance!
