AMD Ryzen 5 4500 vs Intel Xeon E5-2680 v4 [For a Working PC]

Nobody asked, so I will.

How to build my own CPU as a producer? I don't have energy to research that. Been researching 16 days about houses, ecology, informatics, systems etc in a row.
If I manage to build CPUs, I can share how it's done and then people might have 1000 computers at $5000 in their house.

I think those CPUs we have in phones are really cheap. So I'll try those first.

This isn't informatics, but electronics. So be mindful about what you're searching for.

I think this would be a combo:
- CPUs of older generations;
- Xubuntu to make it not overheat and reduce stutters;
- well optimized software written in Python / C++ (no bloats, limited libs to almost 0; memory efficient).

And automate those instances. For some reason I think about keeping the GUI.

The easiest way to get all the components will be to… buy a used phone.
Replace system, case and sell as something else. Create a system to get a replaceable battery.

I am upgrading my working PC, this is NOT for a business nor for gaming purposes. I just love fast PC.

I am also NOT a graphic designer but need to run window apps that require a decent amount of resources.

Right now I am debating between 2 offers and the main difference between them is the processor.

One is an AMD Ryzen 5 4500 and the other is an Intel Xeon E5-2680 v4.

I have benchmarked both (https://www.cpubenchmark.net/compare/4816vs2779/AMD-Ryzen-5-4500-vs-Intel-Xeon-E5-2680-v4) and the Xeon is slightly ahead:
  • Cores: 6 vs 14
  • Threads: 12 vs 28
But what keeps me from choosing the Xeon is that it was launched 8+ years ago and is set as a Server CPU.

If you had to choose between those 2 given the information provided here, which would you choose? Also, is there a better alternative around that same price range?

I studied computer hardware in university and always liked to assemble PCs, so I thought that my two cents may be useful for you. Given the two options, I will choose the AMD Ryzen 5 4500 for some reasons, taking your use case into consideration and not running any server or resource heavy tasks like video editing or 3D rendering.

Here's my reasons:

1. Modern Architecture:
Ryzen 5 4500 is based on a way more modern architecture compared to the Xeon E5-2680 v4. This boils down to much better power efficiency, higher IPC, and support for much more modern features and technologies.

2. Desktop Optimization: Ryzen 5 4500U is a consumer-grade desktop processor, developed exclusively to deal with general tasks and applications of the desktop. It always tends to offer snappier and more responsive experiences with typical workloads, at least when dealing with Windows apps.

3. Better Value for Your Needs: While the Xeon has more cores and threads, those really are optimized for server workloads where multi-threading and parallel processing are key. For typical desktop use, which includes all the apps you mentioned, you may not utilize those extra cores and threads, so the Ryzen 5 is a better value in terms of performance per dollar.

Finally, if you want to future-proof, then the Ryzen processor might be a safer bet. The Xeon is quite an older hardware piece, which may not support certain new technologies or optimizations in software much further down the line.

P.S. Alternatives: If you want to spend the same but get maybe even a better performance, then the answer would be Ryzen 5 5600X, or even the Intel Core i5-11400. Both of these processors are great performers in single-core and multi-core benchmarks, and they carry a strong recommendation as solid, do-it-all picks for fast-and-responsive PCs.

A good PC is basically a lifesaver. And both of these CPUs are kind of bad. You need at least a Ryzen 5600x to have a decent work experience, or preferably a Ryzen 5900x for a proper workstation.
 
This isn’t really a like-for-like comparison. One is a desktop cpu, the other this a server cpu.

As a rule of thumb, I’d say you’d have a better time running desktop cpu for apps running on Windows desktop operating systems and server cpus for windows servers or bare-metal hvs. But I guess determing optimization will depend on what these applications are?
