Hi,

I've just transferred some USDT from my Coinbase wallet to my Metamask wallet and I'm not seeing the money in Metamask even though the transaction report in Coinbase wallet says was successful.

Now, as many of you know, I have no idea what I'm doing, I just can't get the hang of this crypto stuff, so I kind of shoot in the dark... Anyway, back to the topic...

About 2.5 years ago when I tried crypto for the first time I created a Metamask wallet which - to my surprise - I have saved the credentials (password + the 12 words key) for in a txt file and now - as I was trying to get the USDT out of my Coinbase wallet to turn it into cash somehow - I stumbled upon this file that had my Metamask credentials saved and as soon as I found this info I re-added the wallet to my Brave browser, copied Metamask's address, plopped it into the Coinbase wallet and went ahead and sent some fake USDT money to the Metamask wallet but - like I said - I can't see the money in Metamask even though the transaction was supposedly successful...

So now I'm wondering: did this money get lost in the twilight zone of crypto networks and blockchains, or will it arrive in my Metamask wallet later?? I don't know...

Also (probably important) I should mention that after I have reinstalled Metamask into my browser and accessed it for the first time I could only see ETH in there, but after I made the transaction and saw that no money shows up in Metamask I panicked and went ahead and added networks like BNB and Base to Metamask because I remember that these 2 networks seem to pop up the most inside of my Coinbase wallet, so I was thinking that I need to have those networks enabled in order to transfer the USDT, but the problem is that I didn't think of adding them before making the transaction (I've only added them AFTER the transaction) and now I'm afraid I might have lost this money. Can someone please tell me what the hell is going on with this fake industry? How come everyone makes transactions instantly while for me every time I click send (regardless of where I send it to) the money never arrives? What's happening?

Please enlighten me :)

USDT is on different chains like ERC, TRC, BNB... if you took your Metamask wallet address, for example USDT ERC but you did a withdrawal for USDT TRC20 then that money is gone.

Check from Coinbase or send me the wallet addresses via DM I can check it for you.

PM'ing you right now...

Yes if you use the wrong network the USDT is lost . I'm not aware this can be "refunded"
I don't think it can be refunded... and yeah, probably that's what I did :(

How much did you transfer?
not much, but I'm not comfortable saying :)

Can the amount be the reason for this?? That would be really weird...

Always check the network of the originating wallet/funds. Copy the network of the receiving wallet and then make the transaction. For clarity, if the USDT in wallet A is in BEP20 network (Binance chain), in the Wallet B that is receiving the funds, copy bep20 address there and proceed with your transaction. Transactions must be on the same network at all times for you not lose your money

yeah, that's how it seems to work... I think I'm finally figuring it out, but alas, now the money's gone :( ...

Anyway, thanks for the tip, it does make sense now that I got used to it a little.... But also, I don't think there's any bep20 token in my Metamask wallet, I've looked for it but I can't find anything about BEP20, USDT, or a combination of these. I can only see USDC or BEPRO, that's all!

You first exercise, then you do. Not the other way around. College hasn't taught you.
If you do things like that impulsively, time to work on that.
college here in Romania in 2005 when I've been to college was different to what's being taught in the West... Besides, I always sucked at school, so I don't think I've learned too much :)

Sucks you lost that man, sorry. First off, it's definitely not just you. What you described is just one of the many reasons crypto will never become mainstream the way it is right now. You'll see the same coin on 20 different chains sometimes. BNB is one of the worst for it. It doesn't help that businesses all take different coins and some will only take very specific ones. It's pretty stupid and pointless in all honesty,

i was just reading someone else did this on another forum. usually its just a matter of adding the network you're on metamask to see it. inspecting the transaction id should tell you what network was used.

Metamask work with Etherum Network I think.
So if you sent to Metamask your address should start with 0x.. ?

I don’t know for deposits , but to withdraw USDT from Metamask you need to link your Metamask wallet + TronLink Wallet .

Maybe your USDT are there , but hidden or something similar because you don’t have USDT added - in.

Anyways , didn’t Metamask notify you via email about a new deposit?

well, it's a long and complicated story in which we (me and my father) don't know any email address because the person who fooled father into this scam has handled everything (wallet creation, depositing funds, transactions, etc) and now the fucker doesn't answer my phone anymore and we can't contact him in any other way either (I think he might have even left the country altogether, but I'm not sure about this, it's what I've heard from other people who knew the dude)...

So yeah, I'm very limited in what I can and can't do with this USDT (I even doubt that it's real to be honest) because I already made 2 transactions to 2 different addresses and - while both transactions were successful - neither of the addresses received the money. I even talked to a Metamask support person since one of the addresses that I've transacted with was my Metamask wallet and even those guys said that they don't understand where this token (USDT ERC20) comes from and why the funds are not in my wallet (although, to be honest, in the Metamask transaction the fault could be all mine since I've transferred USDT BEP20 to Metamask that only had ETH activated, so it's possible that the money is lost for good)...

But anyway, it's a long and convoluted story, one that gives me headaches like none of you can imagine since crypto is harder to comprehend for me than alien languages, I simply hate this scammy industry and want to have none to do with it, but father tasked me with trying to get this "money" out and now I'm scratching my head how to do this (thank God that there were some helpful members who really walked me through this, otherwise I wouldn't have gotten even this far)...

So yeah, I kind of digressed (sorry, my head hurts like mad), but the point is that we have no email address saved anywhere and father doesn't even remember whether he's been asked for one during the creation of this wallet since this was almost an year ago and my 76 y/o pap hardly remembers what he'd eaten yesterday....
