Google Discover: Adding AMP = Great Results

I have a decently high traffic site, about 4.5m visitors a month. We redesigned a few months ago and decided to remove AMP as suggested by many ad ops. BAD IDEA. Our traffic took a nose dive post post redesign. After running a ton of tests we thought it had to do with the Core Vitals update. That did affect us but Google Discover really dipped hard. We use to get 20-40k clicks a day from Google Discover. Post redesign and removing AMP our daily clicks dropped to 5-7k.

We spent a 6 weeks with my devs fixing Core Vitals performance issues and it did helped with general SEO but Google Discover still did not improve.

As a random test, I figured I'd try to reimplement AMP. Within 24 hours our Google Discover traffic shot back up. We removed AMP mid march 2024 and reimplemented it May 9 2024.

Hope this helps some of you deciding on remove AMP. DON'T.

And if you don't have AMP for your content site, I highly recommend utilizing it.

Accelerated Mobile Pages. It's a project that makes simplified mobile pages, which ultimately made mobile versions of websites run faster. It used to be a strong ranking factor a few years ago.

There were a lot of changes by google that kinda gave a number of inaccurate readings. But the redesign along with the Core Vitals update def hit us hard. We've only just recovering from that after making a number of Core Vitals improvements. But AMP in itself is a huge Core Vitals improvement for mobile.

AMP is def not dead as everyone likes to tell you. We got tricked into this thinking. Its one of the best performance enhancers I've seen. Completely night and day.

I was one of the people who shouted loud and clear that AMP is dead, but 1-2 years ago when I used to do this it really was dead (but apparently only for a few months). These mofos at google change their minds faster and more sneakily than thieves who just spotted a new victim on their way out of jail

Exactly. Keeping this in mind, AMP can never be out of the game.

Well glad I stumbled about this thread.. amp for me looked like dead technology, something that was intended for old phones with no access to wifi or even 3g I'll have it a go on my site..

I used the one on the right - AMP for WP. So far so good for core vitals. Went from ~60 to 90, and was able to make it look halfway decent without upgrading to the pro version, which has themes and more customizations. Don't know how long it'll take before I can know for sure if it worked, but glad I found this thread to at least give it a shot. Thanks!
