Yes, but it also helps if you have added to conversations without dropping links before you start doing so.

Also if you plan to insert links on forums posts then you need to add it in a natural way and not spamy because forums will not alow you if they dont bring value

links that get traffic are valuable in google's eyes, and forums are one of the best ways to get traffic. If you're active on the forum and you're providing value I'm pretty sure those links will give you good business even outside of google.

So yes, it's worth the time and effort, but notice the key words here: TIME + EFFORT

forums are one of the best ways to get traffic.

i agree with that point. niche based forums where you can attract more traffic. Ecommerce site i manage got a few sales from the forums.

My next question would be is how relevant do the forums have to be? I’m in the insurance industry (insurance agency). Not too many insurance related forums out there but a ton of finance or personal finance forums out there. I went to school for finance and economics and can def contribute and it’s at least somewhat related to personal finance and sometimes directly.
