Duplicate Content - How Confusing...

Just watched a webinar recording from Mark Ling and Jason Jell (Brad Callen Worker) and was very surprised to learn that someone can actually pull an article from Ezine, put it on their site and use it to get very good rankings.

I am just learning SEO and I see constantly, the talk of duplicate content penalty. I just find it compelling that despite all this talk of it, you can see people getting good results in the big G using other peoples content.

Any thoughts?

Why do that when you can slap a 400+ word article together in 12 - 15 minutes?

If duplicate content really did cause a big penalty for sites, why would autoblogs and aggregate websites list?

I think the main reason that people believe there is a duplicate content penalty is because if Google only allows 10 sites on the first page and 100 sites have the same article then 90 site get penalized, right?

It's all about targeting, if your site is about bull dogs, but you have a copied article about terriers, odds are you won't rank for that, but if you put an article up about the best food for your bull dog, I bet you would, even if other sites have that article.

Also, how would Google know who to penalize? Although they are often fast at indexing new content they are not instantaneous, and if someone is autoblogging and just grabs the article from the RSS feed, how would Google decide who to penalize? In that case, really getting ranked does not come down to original content, it just comes down to getting your content indexed first...

Hmmm... I smell a new ebook, tool, piece of software coming...

if you all believe that then read through the threads and see about some individual who have been penalized or lost rankings due to duplicate content its about luck sometimes you get away with it and sometimes you don't.

I think it depends on how many times the content has been "duplicated" and also the type of site the content is on. For example, many "directory" type sites that are basically "yellow page" sites for things like public records (for example) do not get penalized for having virtually the same info. However, it does help if the site itself is unique and if the order of the content is unique.

Well, here's my feelings and experience about duplicate content:

There are only two instances of duplicate content that google seems to penalize IMO. 1. Same content on multiple pages of the SAME site. 2. Same content on SIMILAR domains coming from the same IP address.

I've just had experience with #2. They picked up my content from multiple sites/different city modifiers and only indexed the first 2... the rest of the sites (about 10) will not be indexed.

Now I'm rotating hosts and reserving domains privately and it seems to be working... just a pain in the neck.

Anyway, when I do use other articles I normally put my comment regarding the article first and then give full credit to the original author. I've had good results doing that... no google problems.

not necessary, for example, people can copy content from blogspot blogs and post on other blogspot blogs, so duplicated content is still on same domain but will get penalised

My experience....on over 50,000 pages ALL using some duplicate content...

If the duplicate content is approx 50% or more of the total of ALL the content on any individual page....you may see some problems....

It only applies to content on the same domain, just ask your self this question.. how would Google know who the original author was or is if the same content appears on the web on 20 sites all at the same time.

I just started using it today, I have a lot of unique articles I have had written and posted on my blogs and directories. I was shocked by how many times my articles have been ripped off and used without a link back, to my original article. Of course I am not stupid enough to think it will never happen, but some of the articles I checked are a couple of days old and are submitted to different directories under different names and no link back or credit given.

I am now thinking I will just wait until a directory publishes a new article and rip it off myself, save me some money. It looks like its a waste of time and money creating unique content, Google will never know who the original author is.

I have three sites that are doing 30 bucks a day in Adsense and they have not one shred of original content and this blogs are 1, 1.5 and 3 years old, so there you go....

I have one site that is all original content, 1.5 years old, doing 80.00 a day in a low paying niche.

Here is the second. Given enough time google will find the duplicate and they will drop it. Assuming exzine has more trust that the domain the duplicate sits on.

Interesting to know what your thoughts is on this regarding possible duplicate content penalty. Video/photo site a bit like youtube style.

Thumbnail (alt video anchor title text)
Video title anchor text url
First 55 characters of video description

Video/photo page:

Video/photo title
Full description of video/gallery

I would say most videos/photo pages full description is around 55 characters or maybe a bit less. Some are more, or considerably more.

Sounds so easy. But the sad fact is that not everyone has the aptitude for writing or have the funds to get someone else do the job for them.

Counting on luck in sustaining one's online business sure sounds scary, doesn't it?
