Is there a guide or advice for competitor analysis?

First you have to identify them, the competitors. Then gather all the information about them. Analyse their strategies, strengths and weaknesses. Then you can draw conclusions about them.

You need to look for commonalities between your businesses and where exactly you overlap.

I think first we need to check their strengths and how much capital they have and can we make something different? I think these are the basic information we need to gather about our competitors.

back in the day (when google actually cared about promoting quality), competitor analysis meant looking for weaknesses of your competitors in order to capitalize on them.

Those weaknesses could have meant anything from content quality to backlink quality to onpage SEO to social media engagement.

Nowadays, however, google hardly gives a rat's ass about quality, they only care about their own pockets and to reward authority regardless of how relevant to the keyword's intent it is. So, I'm not sure what advice to give you other than trying to find keywords for which there aren't many authoritative sites ranking in top 5 and hope for the best.

Either this, or boost your site's authority until you outrank everyone based on your site's DR alone, this is the law of the jungle that google promotes...

Explained him very nicely ;)

I use SimilarWeb Pro To find out the potential competitors and keywords they are targeting. Then SEMRush To find out what they are doing. It requires some time but making bullet points and then devising a strategy this way is easy.

To begin, find out who your competitors are, then check out what they're doing well and not so well. This helps you plan your own strategy better

This makes a lot of sense to me, thanks.

I don't think there is a wrong or right way. You should keep it short and simple: identify who they are, note down their caracteristics(perks and dissadvantages), look what they are focusing on, look at their evolution, check their presence on the market... you can analyse you see fit and draw your conclusions. Draft a sketch analysis to start with then fill out your fields as you have your info. Depending on what you are looking at, you can access many tools to help you with it(SimilarWeb, ChatGPT, and many more).

So when we do competitor analysis for our link building clients we look into what the top-performing ones are doing, for example, what kinds of content they have, the links they are building, the number of links they have per page, keywords they seem to be targeting, etc.

From there you can identify what you (or your client) are not doing and if there are any gaps to focus on.

From there you can also look into some more detailed keyword analysis, which will give you a nice well-round view of where you sit in comparison to your competitors and to create a strategy.

How do you guys tackle this task? What are we specifically looking for?
Rules of engagement have changed. I remember back in 2021 when I was starting a site, the only analysis I did was how to make content format better than competitors and trust me, basic keyword research. And boom it exploded. Now you've got to see your competitor's link profile, the strategy they are adopting, the way they are catering keywords and articles. Etc. So it's all tough! Start by finding the KGR. I still do it as it mathematical makes sense to me. Then semrush

To discover competitors, start by pinpointing products or services that closely to what your website offers. Then, conduct searches specifically within the target locations to locate these similar offerings. By doing this, you can uncover the top competitors who are ranking prominently in the Search Engine Results Pages (SERPs) for keywords that are relevant to your business. After that by using the tools like SEMRUSH, AHREFS You can simply compared the stats of your website W.r.t your competitors
