First let me say I’m not an expert in marketing techniques, I haven’t got an MBA and I’m not buying (or selling) anything. I’m just a retired Brit who has a small website where I write original satire as a pass time. That’s right, I’m not making money from it which will shock and bewilder the average American who wouldn’t get out of bed in the morning unless there was a profit to be made from it.

I’ll throw out a question for you. Why are the majority of Americans so gullible? At a rough estimate I’d say only about 10% of content here is spam free.

Believing in Fairies​

So you’ve built a website maybe for a couple of hundred dollars. It’s got the usual calls to action, pop-up ads, bought backlinks, a spammy look to it and you’re wondering why you’re not the next Amazon. Here’s a thought; maybe it’s because along with the millions of other identical sites out there yours is also crap?

Someone promised to get you on google’s front page for $10? Really? Your $100 go daddy site is going to knock sites like Amazon or ebay off their number one spot if you give them $10? What’s that American saying about selling a bridge?! Look at the websites of those trying to scam you and scratch your head wondering why they’re not on page one themselves. If you believe all the nonsense they’re offering perhaps you shouldn’t even have a website.

Buying Backlink Crap​

Backlinks for sale? What kind of backlinks do you think you’ll get? They won’t be from authoritative sites tailor made for you. They’ll be a private collection of identical rubbish links from low authority sites who are stupid enough let spam links on to attract anyone because they’re desperate. What is the point of having a link from a failing site selling pet food on your site selling shoes? Do you think google isn’t aware of all these useless links pointing to your site? It’s about quality not quantity and one good backlink from an authoritative site is worth a hundred from low authority spam filled sites selling useless junk.

Links from genuine government sites? When did you ever see a genuine government site linking out to some obscure site selling something?

Suggestions​

Don’t use black hat techniques and then complain when you’re penalized. Stick to good on/off site SEO and promote your site on social media. Join various niches of your topic or product and write good original content for them and hopefully get a link back. If a site has a no follow policy don’t waste your time writing for them. Ditch the pop-up ads and email collections and try to be original because if you follow the herd you’ll end up just another needle in a haystack. That’s the hard part, how to be original and unless you can think of something that sets you apart from others you’ll end up being just like the others.

Tweak your site, continually improve, think about suggestions across the web … If nothing works it may just be whatever you’re selling or your website is crap (perhaps both) and it’s time to start again, or give it up as a bad job. There’s nothing shameful about failing and having to rethink and start again and this time having learned your lesson, but get these silly ideas out of your head that sitting at a computer all day will earn you millions!

Lol, this is a funny post but a lot of truths to it. But I'll forever do BlackHat SEO. Once you buy backlinks, it's considered blackhat. Damn if you do, damn if you don't. I have seen Google hit sites, that play by their rules. I'm done playing by their rules.

Don't try to produce quality content.
Instead create videos of some junkie trying to juggle dog turds. Or, something equally lousy which only appeals to low IQ schleps.

If you play by the same rules as everyone else you shouldn’t have a problem. If you’re trying to game the system then don’t complain if you’re penalized. It really is as simple as that. If you can’t play by the same rules as others and think you’re clever enough to beat the system then I’ve no sympathy for you when it goes wrong.

Almost impossible to do any SEO work without failling into BH category. Techniques that were considered gray hat a few years ago, now are fully considered blackhat due Google Updates.

We as SEOers just need to flow with the Algorithm. It was always a rat and cat game.

Why is it that those who use black hat techniques are the ones complaining the most? I opened a little freebie site in mid-April, concentrated on SEO and content and have had literally hundreds of visits in only three weeks. Google penalizes for something you've done, not for something you haven't.

Don’t try to understand google’s algorithm and think you’re cleverer than they are. Stick to basics and write good content instead of trying to cheat and then complaining about it.

I assume many (not all) of you are trying to cheat because your sites have crap content and a spammy look to them and no one is interested in what you’re trying to sell. If you’re willing to cheat, you’re probably not the kind of people anyone would want to buy anything from anyway.

Have I upset some of you? Let’s be realistic and say the chances of you becoming the next Amazon is zero and the money you’re spending on your site you’re throwing away.

So let's recap, someone who just joined today who admittedly has a small website that isn't making money, has taken the time to attack Americans specifically despite this being a global forum, and attacks methods he has neither used nor understands.

If you take the time to read the enormous amount of content here, which you haven't having been a member for just a few hours, you'll see that no-one, not a single person is trying to be amazon or thinks that's achievable for $100 for the website and $10 in backlinks.

Instead, everyone here is trying to give themselves the best chance of making money from their websites by understanding fully exactly how the SEO game works and trying to use it to its full potential instead of blindly writing content in the hopes that google will pick them ahead of 1 billion other websites.

I have only been a member here 1 day longer than you and I already consider it a gold mine. If you attack less and learn more you'll get the full benefit of this place too.

@Halo_Onyx I don’t make money because I’m not selling anything and yes, the vast majority here are Americans trying to make money. Poster attacks are a last resort. You won’t beat google and that’s why the majority are trying to beat the system.

I’m not the one complaining, you are. Some sites succeed and are lucky, some don’t and are unlucky, but the sites who try to game the system never do. How long have you been trying to cheat for and has it worked? Or is it one of those Einstein quotes of stupidity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results?

Instead of concentrating on spammy baclinks, how many here could write a publishable 500 words on what they’re trying to sell? If you can, why not put that on your site instead of useless low authority backlinks from some clown trying to re-sell VPN’s?

I’ve had websites for years, but as I’m not selling anything I’m not prepared to pay for anything either. The SEO I do myself, my content is original as are my layout and graphics. If it all goes wrong that’s not google’s fault or anyone else’s. It’s all down to trying your best and if that doesn’t work then so be it. The answer isn’t to start cheating but to understand where you went wrong and learn from it.

Seems to me the ones complaining are the black hat people, because there isn’t this angst on other sites dealing with websites. Let’s be honest and say the overriding issue here is why isn’t my site attracting people in droves? The honest answer is because it’s probably crap, full of black hat spam and google is penalizing you for it.

How do you stand out from the crowd? You have the same chance as everyone else. Google doesn’t differentiate and you get indexed just like everyone else. No matter what we think of our own, some sites are just better than others. Some look better, others have better content, yet others concentrate on social media exposure … The point is you DO things to give yourself a better chance and if it doesn’t work resorting to underhand techniques won’t help. That’s the reality of it and so, having seemingly ruffled a few feathers, it’s getting late here and I’m off to bed.

I think people need to stop arguing over black hat vs white hat tactics.
Instead we should focus on how to work around google's dictatorship.

I personally would rather focus on growing traffic from 10 small sources than putting all my effort on one big giant that can fuck me over at the drop of a hat.

Why are you going to target keywords which Amazon is trying? Try easier keywords, they will not need even high investment like hard keywords.

If you you’re a keyword fan then go for an original catchy brand name that won’t have competition and build on it. Use it to write content for links, use it on social media … It takes time, but eventually it will take off and if it’s good as your content should be, people will eventually notice. I’ll throw some at you. ‘I’m lovin it’, ‘Finger lickin’ good.’ They’re no longer keywords, they’ve become brand names in themselves. Those elusive keywords you’re searching for? Among the millions, someone has already found them and straight away you’ve got competition.

‘Tom’s 20% Hardware Discount Store.’ How can you find keywords for that? You can’t, you’ve already failed before you start,

Backlinks? You can’t force them and if you’ve got to buy them it means your site isn’t good enough. It’s why you’re here isn’t it, to find a way to be successful by spending money. Doesn’t work does it.

Not every site will be successful, but you’re trying to find out a way that will make your site a winner without actually putting in any work yourselves. Have you looked through the ‘Marketplace’ section here? They’re queuing up to scam the gullible! Twenty percent discount, only $200, guaranteed to get you on page one … It’s so obviously a scam it’s laughable.

You won’t beat google, so why waste your time trying to do so? No one here is going to get on page one and beat the big boys. When I type in my brand name google takes me to all my social media and content sites, including my website, but that happened over a period of years. Another pseudonym I’m currently using on my website takes me to number six on page one under some videos and that’s in three weeks. I’m happy with that, that’s success for me. What’s success for you?

for money, dude! All of the "for profit" corporations - and especially the big, trillion dollar "for profit" companies like google, MS, amazon, apple, etc - are doing what they're doing only (and always) for the money.

If it makes sense (from a profit-pulling perspective) for google to burn their entire business to the ground they'll do it tomorrow and without hesitation or without a care in the world about their users, partners, or whoever. It's the capitalistic mentality (sell your own mother just to get 1 more cent), you don't have to wonder why google do what they do because the answer is always the same, whether or not we - the plebes - can see it: for money

oh dear oh dear.... some people are still so naive... don't believe any BS you hear from Google. They don't want to improve search results the only results they care about are the profit results of the company. $$$$
