Glass ceiling for positions

Hi all. Site for the USA, competition by keywords (semrush kd) ~62. Main page. For a year and a half, for the main key phrases on the main page, it cannot go higher than 5th place. About 1.5 years ago we started purchasing links (3-4 links), which after a month resulted in a drop in the necessary queries to 8-9 positions. We immediately began redirecting (asked sellers to change the URLs of these links) these links to other pages on the site, and after 1-2 months the positions returned to 5th place. We tried to change the main one, there were 3 different versions, nothing grew above the 5th position. In January of this year, we started purchasing links again, and again we got the same result, a drop, but the purchase took longer, and for many positions the main page dropped to the second page of the search results. And now it’s not clear what to do next, links can always be redirected, but how to raise this page above the 5th position? Maybe we can wait and not buy any more links, and the positions will return back to 5th place? This is not the case with other pages, but the competition there is lower everywhere for key phrases.

Have you encountered this: after purchasing links, your rankings dropped within 3 months? And they keep falling?

But my request is not local (we have a SaaS project management tool), and plus/minus competitors above my position have the same indicators for links and site trust. Previously, our site had already taken first place for these requests, but that was 4 years ago, and the competition was much lower. In all other characteristics we are similar. We have exactly the same keywords in Spanish, and there we are ahead of the same competitors and ranked 1st (in Spain and Mexico). And the funny thing is, all these competitors have the same pages as the English version, just translated into Spanish, just like ours.

I already did this, as I wrote above, then about 3 months also passed, I stopped purchasing, and then deleted these links after another couple of months and all the positions returned after 1-2 months. In my experience, the timeline for pages to lose positions took several weeks to months to see a noticeable effect. for some adjustments, the impact on rankings cauld be relatively quick.
