For example, if you get a domain about dog treats and you convert it into financial loans, you are asking for it.
You can still get away with doing this but it's hit or miss. And getting more and more miss.
Most important thing is to identify primary, original topic of the aged domain and not stray too far from it in your new content.

Definitely, I will be aware of relevancy. Same niche should have work better.

the key to a good PBN is that only you have access to it, nobody else! if you buy from sellers they often share the sites with tons of customers, so its actually not a real PBN. thats why you see mixed "reviews" of how good PBNs work. with a network that only you own, you have all the power and link juice for yourself.

I tried niche pbns and PBN links for my personal project and it worked. Low-mid competitive keywords.

Rental PBN's like the one @tiiberius has works i think I once used it with an emd domain in less than 30 days i was in top 10. It stayed there for around 2 months. Although it was not in all geos but i think in three months it might have.

Yes, they still are. Good backlinks from strong sources are still very effective in SEO. That's never changed.
