So Google kicked me... Now what?

Hello everyone,

I'm a white-hat SEO lover. So here's the thing:

I started a new website on a microniche some time ago. In my home country there are 1.500.000 results.

In February I got pulled down from page 2 to page 5, now it's decreasing - page 6, 7 and now it's on the 8th page.

I really need your help to improve my rankings. Here is what I did:

- Profile backlinks - 150 backlinks at a time and no more;
- Onlywire.com - submit only once per article per day;
- No updated content - I inserted 5 articles, no more.

The thing is: this happened to 5 of my websites. I did the same things for the other ones... So, my question: what should I do?

You need powerful backlinks, not just profile/article backlinks. Search the forums for blog commenting methods with pagerank or buy backlinks from webmasters (there are various forums that offer link sale sections). Simply put, it is very difficult to rank with just articles/profile backlinks.

So here's what I'll do:

• Updated content (1 per day or 3/4 per week);
• 10 profile backlinks per day;
• Onlywire;

change your content... google values freshness...

Increase your keyword density to 5-15%... just a hair more than whatever the SERP leader has, but try not to be a statistical outlier.

Tune for 1-2 phrases max on each page. If you tune for everything then you basically tune for nothing.

Only use 1 phrase in meta keywords. Any more than 2 and you might as well not have meta keywords.

Never use a keyword more than 4 times in a page title... there is no SEO value to using a keyword more than once in a page title anyway, but 5+ occurrences in a title will get you booted from the SERPs.

Keep meta-description under 250 bytes and have 1-4 keyword matches.

Link to other relevant non-competing sites on your subject like wikipedia, howstuffworks, about.com articles, etc...

DO NOT USE <H1>... currently a styled <P> will get you further, <DIV> and <SPAN> are better than H1 too... look at my other threads for source on this.

Make sure you have the "formal extras" those being:
* proper validated doctype tag
* robots.txt file
* favicon
* apple-itouch icon
* proper content type

If you can get the same content by visiting http://domain.com/page.html as with http://www.domain.com/page.html then you have duplicate content. Canonical tags credit the original and eliminate duplicate content penalties and help googlebot crawl your entire site more efficiently. Google's perception of duplicate content used to be measured with supplemental index ratio. It is very difficult to make those calculations now for large sites. So just use canonical premptively on every page and reduce the number of variations in URLs that can lead to the same page.

You have to do this on a regularly basis and I think that only profile backlinks are not enough. You have to vary your backlinks. Find at least 4-5 backlinks sources (blog comments, articles, web 2.0..etc) and try to work on them.

This is not completely correct and has not been for some time. Yes, Canonical IS helpful, but it's NOT helpful when it's a simple matter of multiple nearly identical ways to access a page. Google isn't stupid, and knows that kind of thing isn't duplicate content. Google does NOT penalize for www vs. non-www ways to access a page, and like wise with / or html or not at the end of a page name. If you serve all of those, canonical simply tells google which one you want to show in the SERPs.

Where canonical DOES matter is when you have duplicate content across more than one SITE (particularly when they don't share a domain). Then it's very important. It's also useful if you have duplicate content that's available under substantially different urls (i.e. mysite/people/wearing/black/hats and mysite/persons/hats/white).
