Google ranking factors

Content quality and relevance, backlinks and domain authority, domain age and history

If it's a low keyword, you can get enough effect with only on-page work and periodic posting.

However, if it's a keyword with a lot of competitors, everything will be important, but I think the number one priority is backlink

Domain Authority

Google has hundreds of ranking factors, to this day it is not fully clear what each of these factors are however a few we know play a big role:

Domain stats (AHREFS and MOZ) overall authority of the domain (goes hand in hand with backlinking)
Trust Google has in your website
Domain age (to a degree)
Spam score (debatable)
Time customer is spending on your website and the amount of interactions that follow on the website.
Onpage factors and optimization
Website speed
Content relevance, quality and LENGTH
Navigation

Load time
Outbound authority links (Hilltop update)
User experience aka Bounce rate % (Rankbrain update)
Authority indicators (E-A-T guidance)

Domain stats (AHREFS and MOZ) overall authority of the domain (goes hand in hand with backlinking)
Spam score (debatable)
these 2 aren't ranking factors

Content relevance, quality and LENGTH
content length is relative (to the topic being addressed). Some keywords will rank with far less content than others, content length used to be a thing 3-4 years ago, but I think google have given up on this metric, or at least they've diminished its importance after seeing people not bothering to read volumes of fluff :)

Thanks for your feedback. Why would you say that a Domain's authority is not a ranking factor?
Regarding article length, I still see longer, relevant articles with a good H1, H2, H3 structure performing well as compared to others. Naturally the content needs to be useful to the user.

I am outdated though and fully assume that I could be wrong. My evidence is anecdotal.

Why would you say that a Domain's authority is not a ranking factor?
the domain authority is a ranking factor, just not the fake authority that SEO tools give. Google are using their own internal metrics to assess a domain's authority and - many times - their internal metrics coincide with the metrics of Ahrefs / MOZ. But Ahrefs / MOZ's metrics are NOT a ranking factor, google simply doesn't care if the sites have DR 90 or DR 0, you can oftentimes see sites with low DR / DA outranking sites with high DR / DA. This is what I meant

still not a ranking factor though.... OK, let's say not an important ranking factor, maybe it does weigh something in the grand scheme of things, but not a lot :)

When it comes to content length the keyword's intent is arguably the most important part of it, there are keywords (some questions for example) whose intent is just the answer YES or NO, and for such keywords there's no point in writing a lot o content. As a matter of fact there's no point in writing any content at all, you just need to reply with YES or NO, and google does this automatically for those keywords, which is why they're not really good keywords to target for your website.

And the same goes for other type of questions like "time in Melbourne right now", or "when is Eastern in 2024" and so on... All of these keywords require no content to be "fully" addressed, which is why I said that the keyword's intent will decide the length of the content and which is why content length is not a ranking factor....

Although, reading the last paragraph again I can see that you can interpret the "content length is not a ranking factor" in 2 ways lol... But anyway, you know what I meant :)
