Years ago when I was a lurker on this forum I saw this method where people are told to leave links to their site anywhere and everywhere. It didn't have to have to be a link, it could just be text of website URL. If enough was left, people would come to the website. Is this still a good idea? Especially as Google has gone mental nowadays and only show about 5 pages of results rather than the millions of web results available.

Who cares what G thinks? I am not bothered about SEO and be not under the mercy of good ol' G.
If you dont care for seo or organic traffic there is no reason for you not to try this

Who cares what they like or not like? If enough of them stick and I get get enough traffic, it's all good
Except that most webmasters moderate their comments. So there's a risk that your comment won't be published, and you'll have exhausted yourself for nothing.
You can always try, but as others have told you, you'll be classified as a spammer by the search engines (not just Google).

It is difficult to find sites to leave comments on I was thinking of doing it on social media.

I remember seeing a thread on here a few years back by a moderator which suggested this and he was making bank.

You will inadvertently tank your site sir. Google is coming after you. Good luck dear :D
I assume Google will only do something if it s a link? Say it was text and the reader had to manually type it into the web browser, does Google still penalize that?

In my experience, the only sites where comments are not moderated are those that don't necessarily have a good reputation with the search engines.

As for the rest, it all depends on what you really want to do. If you've explained it, either I've missed it or I haven't understood.

What are you talking about? A traffic bot? I/ve looked into it some and the closest thing I can think of is
Guest Posts - Scrapebox
Contact Forms - GSA Website Contact
Referrer Spam - Custom script

Typing in the comment by hand manually and making sure it is valuable in places like Quora Reddit etc. Leaving say 25 a day for a year+

Yeah, I have QAPop for Quora I use to get analytics and get top answers. I'm on Reddit, though have not developed my business there yet.

Don't forget guest posts on Facebook groups!

works if you have 1000 websites with unique content, otherwise you will overdo single website and get caught

it's safe to post niche website from a single account up to couple hundred times but other than this, they will link everything

well go ahead and and try it. The issue is nonrelevant traffic, not G
But just don't do it if you have just one website and nothing else in your hand
