Imagine you have an old account on a shopping website and you dont even remember it anymore.

what about all the social media accounts that were sold with fake gmails ?
Most of my top twitter accounts are on gmail.

What about people deployed over seas or in prison. I'm sure there's other scenarios. Ultimately email is free and they can do whatever they want. Wonder what the first headline will be of a person who attempts to fight judicially.

So this means millions of usernames registered to software, businesses, online sites and such will be available? I see a lot of fraud taking place if they make those names available again.

This counts for something. It's always good to at least keep one's Google account active and not redundant. Most times, it gives rooms for suspicion.

No, I highly doubt it.
Even if you manually close an account now, you can never re-use that username again.
That would completely defeat the purpose of their "goal" to begin with.

Abandoned accounts are often vulnerable to attack, as they are less likely to have two-factor authentication enabled.

by doing what you suggested would reduce from some form of security to absolutely no security.

The gmail of my main business PayPal account is inactive, I didn't have access for 4 or 5 years as I lost the psswd and the phone number linked to it, I should change it ASAP.

This is really bad news, Login to multiple gmail account one by one is very difficult, is there any gmail tools to login multiple account?

Thanks for the reminder. I think what google wants is 2 things:
1) remove unused accounts.
2) after some users log their multiple accounts, they're gonna be tracked and linked to each other by their new system, eventually triggering all kind of god-knows-what security system. For example, since last year I got a lot of google reviews removed because they linked all my accounts, probably after I log on the remaining ones, they're gonna trace them and proceed to removal.
