[Method] How to get your site on Google Discover

Finding a subreddit that allows sharing is a big headache for me.
I’m wondering how you’re able to find such subreddits.

I'm testing this right now with another site. If this works, it becomes one of the easiest things to pull off.

Will be wonderful. Please keep us all updated. My site is still not in Discover but I am confident that this could work.
I am also ready to implement in case you have any other ideas.

I was thinking if posting some URLs in comments can also offer some benefits in terms of Google picking up the site. It isn't always easy to get featured in a subreddit, especially the popular ones.

I'm a bit worried about the engagement a comment can get, but you can never know with Reddit.
It's also harder finding a reliable supplier for comments upvotes.
 
For Upvotes, I have a very good guy, the cost is slightly higher but works good. Member on this forum.
For comments, the cost is quite steep. BTW, how many average comments are you needing for a post?

After you get around 15-20 they start talking among themselves so I don't exactly have a number.

Can you tell if google web stories have got anything to do with google discover?
 
Many of people are also using Whatsapp Group to drive the traffic and get into the discover page and the traffic from whatsapp groups will count on the organic traffic from searches which eventually helps in moving to discover feed.

I was also about to ask you about that. I have read somewhere that Web Stories is a good way to get into discover. I will try to find the source. Google has been trying to promote Web Stories and AMP.

This is a follow-up to a short case study I wrote for optimizing content for Google Discover, so if you got featured, make sure to check it out, too.

This method is quite simple and consistent. I tried it with every one of my sites, and today they’re all featured on Discover. It may have not worked in the first time, but it never took my more than 2-3 times (once I figured it out, of course).

How Does it Work​

The Idea here is to show Google that your content is interesting and engaging. Please note that I wrote ‘show Google’ and not ‘make Google believe’ because if your content sucks, even if it were to show up on Discover, it wouldn't perform, and you’ll stop appearing.

Technical Requirements​

There are a couple of requirements you need to meet:

  1. Well-written content that is not promotional.
  2. A well-optimized, fast site (preferably with AMP)
  3. Your content must include an image that is at least 1200px wide.

The Method​

We’ll post our newly posted article to a relevant subreddit that accepts the type of content you’re about to share. It’s important because you don’t want the crazy bastards from Reddit to tear you apart just so the mods can remove the post after a few minutes. This is also the reason you need your content to be good.

Your content must be brand new because the newer it is, the better your chances of success are. You can see that even if the content is really good and engaging, it naturally dies after a few days:

Write a few words, add a link to the article, and post it to Reddit. Buy a few upvotes, more than you need to be on the top of the Subreddit.
If you can, buy some comments from aged accounts (This is the part I struggled with the most) to show that your content is engaging. Include some believable compliments, questions, and remarks on specific parts of your content. It has to look real. If you don't have a reliable source for this, your content must be of the type that gets this type of comments on its own.

Make sure your featured image is great, as well as your headline. You can afford to go over the Google search character limit a bit, but don’t waste characters on your site name. I went over some more best practices here if you’re interested.

An ideal scenario is that over time, you'll be constantly on Discover, no matter if your articles are hits or not. Remember that Google needs some filler content, too.

Sometimes it won’t catch Google’s attention right away. You can get featured within a couple of hours, the next day, or not at all. If your content weren’t good enough, you’d have to try again with another article. Save your most interesting content for this.

do you have a proof? eg. an AB test between two domains?
Based on my past experience, I had a news publication as a client that got dropped in Google News and Google Discover. Earlier, it had about 30% of traffic coming from News & Discover. After I fixed the top images - the site started to appear in around 3 months. My hypothesis is that low image resolution affects the Google News ranking algorithm introduced in 2020 (or 2019 I think), which replaced the manual process of enlisting site into Google News. My hypothesis is based on Barry Adams' articles. https://www.seoforgooglenews.com/

How would you design such a test?

A site I never promoted on reddit which is not on Discover vs one I did promote on reddit that is featured on Discover. This is pretty easy to present, but still doesn't prove anything.
High res featured image is one of Google's requirements for appearing on Discover, but some members here were features with low res images, too.
