We're still small but the community is growing.

MS is being a bitch with their os and Mac is too expensive for some of us. Linux is just in the sweet spot. And since everything is on the web these days anyways, choosing Linux is perfect. Even better if you are a dev.

BTW in an update to my earlier post, if you go with Windows 10 IoT LTSC you will have offical support until 2032:

As for Linux as a desktop OS... you can make it work in the same way putting mud tires on racing motorcycle and riding it in the dirt can be made to work: you can do it but you're gimping yourself. Linux does not have a selection of decent office and productivity apps, i.e. photoshop, nor is it suitable for playing games. I can't see how anyone who is serious about business would voluntarily choose to handicap themselves by running linux instead of windows for desktop purposes.

That is a 2005s thought. Office365 can run on the web, Linux has Libreoffice and Openoffice Desktop Editors (Microsoft office clone). GIMP is a good alternative to Photoshop but if you want to use photoshop itself then you can use it through WINE which allows you to run any Windows program natively on Linux. And about games, check Steam. There are so many Linux games out there now because of Steam + Steam proton can run a lot of Windows games on Linux with the same or even better performance.

You are not handing yourself by using Linux, but thinking that you are handicapped because of Linux, then no your thoughts are handicapped.
 

Windows XP had in the past only one connection to update.microsoft.com
i am not sure if the new operating systems are more "secure" with 1000+ connection to different servers :D

I personally can't think of an app that doesn't have a cloud based alternative. Chrome OS is enough to do almost anything these days.

Yeah, let me install linux then use wine instead of just using windows. That's smart. And then let me run a "cloud" version of office and store private documents in some corporate cloud I have no control over instead of just using the version of office I want installed locally. That's even smarter.

Games do not run better under linux than windows 9/10 times, and unlike linux windows just works - you install a program, it runs. No need to find the particular version for your distro, or else roll the dice on compiling it. Other major linux drawbacks include a lack of support for DRM like wildvine, so you cannot watch amazon prime videos in anything above 720p.

You people who shill it for desktop love to ignore the countless hours people waste getting basic shit like GPU drivers to work properly. Not only that but if you run on a laptop you get better battery life with windows in addition to all of the other benefits. And because of "systemd" being standard on almost all new linux distros, you cannot even claim to be free of embedded malware/spyware. SystemD is literally cancer.

Cloud? No thanks. And if this is your argument for desktop linux, it failed, because these clown apps would still run far better in win10 than linux...which still has no real graphical UI and is still trying to limp along using X as the basis of its GUI instead of a real GUI like windows.

You haven't done the same test on systemD and its "secret" background connections, some of which are hard-coded and cannot be disabled.

Meanwhile, for windows you can disable just about all of that using group policy editor OR just download "shutup10" from oosoft that will do the same thing in an easier interface.

i use https://safing.io/ to monitore and block all connections
 
many people say oh win11 terrible. same thing was said when we went from xp>vista>7>8.1>10.
all likelihood you can tweak a few interface settings and get it looking just like win10 or 7 cosmetically, if you prefer.
i have a job in IT. 1000+ endpoints are workstations with incompatible processors. will be fun days ahead upgrading everything before EOL date.
i agree for home use, linux is nice. for work environment, it will always be windows.
