There's a very solid chance that it will be banned in many other places. It can do too much and it can be too disruptive, too fast, to the way the world works. We went from 0 to 100 in 1 day. That's not smart. It's like having nothing and all of the sudden having iPhones. That didn't happen. First you had regular brick phones. Most people barely knew what AI was until a few months ago and now all of the sudden there's something that sounds just like a person.

Then, besides its disruptive nature, there's the question of "where does all this data come from?". Because in reality, nobody gave this thing permission to use their data. Imagine you, unwillingly, helping to train something that will eventually cause you any sort of problem or replace you. So...you just helped creating it but you have absolutely no rights over it?

Yeah, it should be heavily regulated, and it will be heavily regulated. You're seeing the early stages of it.

Keep in mind that most big websites are against you scraping their data. And yet, they create tools that steal everyone's data without asking for permission for anything. You can't just openly create a business that offers the scrapped data of every website, can you? I don't think you can, legally. But apparently big tech can do everything.

How may models and services will they ban?
If you just check how things are growing everyday there's a new AI tech/model/service in the news.
And the best part we now have a few opensource FREE of these now.
Like the Gpt4all, Vicuna, Llama & Alpaca and God knows how many more.
People, society, governments administrators all will have to adapt to the change.

However, governments have a lot to lose in simply allowing it to happen this way, since they will have no answer for the amount of people getting fucked by this technology. What are they gonna do if people start losing jobs in mass and demand a solution for it?

Keep in mind that we have jobs for almost everyone and we still have a lot of people living in poverty. In my country, the average salary is around 800 euros. That's what would cost you renting a very cheap apartment. Now imagine people start losing jobs left and right. I don't see how governments can possibly allow that.

They can't slow down the development of these technologies, but they can absolutely ban them from behind used in the job market. Lets not forget they forced the entire society to stay at home for months. Banning ChatGPT and similar tech would be nothing in comparision. They can and will probably do it. If it's right or wrong, that's another conversation. Same with if they would be successful or not. But the attempt will probably happen.

But if something doesn't provide society with positive results, and rather starts pushing people towards unemployment and poverty, wouldn't the governments be right to stop it? Usually people ask their government to fight anything that harms them. The government is there to protect its people.

One good example is a few countries not allowing foreigners to buy houses there, because that drives prices up and the natives stop having the ability to find a place to live. That's happening in my country and a lot of people are asking for the government to stop purchases from foreigners. We have single bedrooms being rented for over 1000 euros a month. That's great for american digital nomads, but it's ruining the way of life of an entire society. Right now you just can't leave your parents house in my country. Every single rat hole is being sold and rented as a luxury property, because americans love this place so much.

This is why I agree that they're most likely correct in slowing down its development and usage. There are already mass layoffs at big tech companies going on, and if even more positions outside of tech can replace their workers with bots, they will.

I've read various proposals to this problem regarding the current infrastructure, although we can't discuss politics here, so I can't say anything else on the matter.
