If the content lacks depth (quantity): add more original and quality content without deleting anything.

Yes.
Most of my articles are only about 1,000 words long, and many articles are ranked at the bottom of the Google homepage and on pages 2 and 3.
I guess it's the lack of depth, so I just add the extra content individually without removing any old content.
Now I am starting to rewrite another 10 or so blog posts on the website, and I look forward to a small breakthrough in rankings and traffic at the end of this month.

A quick update buddy - after reading your suggestion I just bought a subscription of Quillbot and tried it. I am currently using Creaitor for this purpose and am quite satisfied with it. But it's a bit costlier ($59/ Month). Quillbot is cheaper ($9/ month) so I was happy.

However when I started rephrasing the content and compared the result of the two tools I found Creaitor producing much much better content than Quillbot.

No wonder why it is so cheap than Creaitor. I am now going to cancel the plan and get my refund.

They offer free trial for 3 days. It paraphrases content like Quillbot but then it also adds some more content that is generated by AI. Their paraphrasing is also better than Quillbot.

Give it a try and let me know what you think about it. (But it is costly than Quillbot.)

Honestly there is no clear answer to it. If you just paraphrase the text, at times it is easily detectable by even a human, let alone Google!

The way Creaitor paraphrases or you can say rewrites the content, it adds more vocabulary and text to it. I am not saying it is 100% perfect. But it's outcome is way better than Quillbot.

Give it a try and you will understand what I mean. (Use the feature 'Content Improve' in it to see what I referring to).

But for me... it's rare, most of the time my improved articles get better rankings.
What do I do with failed edits? I monitor for a week or two and then revert to the ranking version and come up with new edits.

The moment it's re-indexed so a few hours but I monitor for weeks to be sure.

In my experience, if ranking drops after indexing it stays there, I just wait for a few weeks to be sure but there isn't really a point of waiting for so long.
One week is more than enough to confirm the drop.

PS: make sure you start counting days from the indexing date as it might take days for google to re-index, although it's rare.

I updated 5 articles yesterday, which were indexed one after another this morning. I checked in the afternoon, and the keyword rankings of 2 articles have improved significantly, and they all entered the first place. The keyword rankings of 3 articles have not changed. Therefore, I need to check if I need to wait longer for the ranking to be confirmed?

Great job on the articles which rank better.
I'd wait for at least a week before changing the other articles.
In my experience, google is fast to drop rankings but at times not so fast to improve.
