Duplicate Content Exposed An Information

Hello There,

Duplicate Content are Penalized.
That's the usual saying.

However, give a thought to this situation....

Blogger A writes a ORIGINAL UNIQUE content on his new Website.
**Usually Google Spiders Index Newer Sites Slower**

And, for example say CNN (Kinda Extreme) copies Blogger A's content and publish that on their site.
**Google Spiders almost instantly index whatever CNN has to offer**

So, in this case the content would be spider-ed first at CNN.
Then, only after say 2 weeks or so it will spider and index the new Blogger A's site.

Hence, does that mean Blogger A has Duplicate Content and he should be penalized?

Definitely Not.

I feel that way also, however duplicate content like say... a 500 word article. If they are ALL the same, same title, same text, same resource box, with same anchor text. I feel as though the link authority will be driven to the ground and not count for nearly as much if posted on 100 sites with variations. But when it comes to ranking for content I pretty much think you are right, but being stuck in the supplemental index is the biggest pain with this, it is real... they don't show users the SAME article 500 times in the SERPs they use that link that says show similar results and if you are trying to rank in the SERPs this is hell for you.

It's simply something that someone made up and has now been spread all over the place.

People submit the same articles to thousands of directories. This is not "duplicate content", it is called syndication and it is perfectly fine.

Using it really isn't a problem but they only serve ONE copy of the article in the serps... lets pretend for Car insurance. Its an amazing article that was #1 in the SERPs and it spread ALL over the web, would the first 1,000 results BE all the copies of that article? No its duplicate so the others are in the supplemental index and not being served to average users. Which is fine I don't think they penalize sites that use it, but they definitely aint serving it to users.

In my experience, I've never had any of my own or seen any one elses site flat out "penalized" for duplicate content. The internet is full of popular news and social sites that republish and spread the same article, content, or news report over and over, something they would not do if every time they posted it they started dropping in the serps.

I have, on the other hand, had someone rip off my sites word for word down to the wordpress theme with the hope of benefiting from it in the serps, only to never rise a single notch in the serps, staying locked on the same page for months on end..

Because of this and many other personal accounts I've read over time, I think duplicate content is simply discounted and ignored by google, rather than penalized. When they happen upon it, the spiders think "seen it already..moving on.." giving little or no credit to the publisher. The only exception to this is where google deems you to be a frequent and popular contributer of popular/recent news and content.

Duplicate content means you duplicate the same content on the same domain trying to fool google that you have too much content on your website.

About duplicating over multiple websites, google understands that with the syndication and rss feeds then there are possibilities that the same content may spread over multiple places. Google will index them all but the one that ranks will be the one with more backlinks since backlinks represent people's interest in that content.

It exists, Google uses filters to determine uniqueness, otherwise I could just scrape everything. I have experience of it, in terms of scraped content. A lot of the links or pages would drop after a period of time. Adding unique content would stick and reverse this affect, so there is a balance it seems.

...and I have heard that if I write an awesome article on a new domain and a large, high pr site copies it quickly then I will be the one penalized because the higher PR site has more authority.

Well I don't know about penalization but I have seen a lot of sites that get that "click here to get omitted results" thing. Try searching for this sentence, in quotes:

"Plumbing, at first glance, is a thankless job that involves hours of mucking around in some environments that might not be so nice."

There's like 15ish article directories that aren't listed because of this. I've also seen the same case when searching for 3 or so words without quotes, just can't think of an example right now. If those were your keywords though, you'd be screwed.

Chances are the top 20-30 results will all have identical content.

Sure, if you just put up a duplicate article somewhere and do nothing you'll get filtered out, however, if you treat it like any other page of yours and build high quality links to it then no, you won't get filtered out anywhere.

In fact, you can even use the same article at different directories, and build high quality links to all of them and have the same exact article ranking on 1st page of Google.

true dat ! this duplicate content story is nothing but an overstated threat from people on forums and all over the net .. have u ever seen how many websites carry the exact same content as the getafreelancer website ?? i mean word-for-word identical copies, and guess what... these websites are ALL affiliates of getafreelancer ! on the same domain/site YES perhaps it might be detected, or on domains that do NOT have enough incoming links. but other than that... there's Nothing that google does to stop duplicate content ))

I disagree dupe content is hidden. The site indexed first gets credit for it initially but after a few days or update it gives credit to the site with the highest authority.

This is exactly what happens to lyrics. Do the following search, in quotes:

"My gunshots'll make you levitate"

Page 14, less than 200 results in, results get cut off by the omitted thing.

i believe there is truth to the duplicate content because when i created my site i copied it exactly just changed the company name and a few other words and i noticed that my site wasnt ranking for a few terms and then i noticed the website i stole it from got a surge in rankings and rose from rank 20M in alexa to like 5M although at that time my site ranked 4M i decided to rewrite all the content on my site and then there site went back to 20M so there is deff something there not sure if it is a penalty but whoever had the content first gets higher serps and a surge in traffic

Paul Counts in his training videos also says duplicate content is a myth basically, it only counts *if i remember correctly* if you have the same dupe content on the same domain (10 articles the same on squidoo for example)

You're right Falconer, there's a difference between duplicate page (whole webpage/HTML file) and duplicate content "on a page". It has to do with making an identical copy of a page.

Try this experiment :
Copy some random website's page (make sure that page it's already indexed).
Change the title of the page
Change the info in the meta tag (keywords & description)
Change ONLY a few words in the first paragraph
LEAVE THE REST of the page as is... don't change more than this !

Bookmark your copied/duplicate page and wait for it to get indexed

I do not think that is true. No one knows for sure what the algorithm is but there is a lot of evidence that if you have a fair amount of duplicated content on your site you will get de indexed - which would qualify as a "penalty". It does not have to be every page.

I do agree that having content on your site that is on other sites does not get you de-indexed or even automatically get you a lower ranking but I think it can - over time - cause Google to give it less authority.

It all depends on your competition - if you have a bunch of sites in your niche all with lots of unique content and all you are doing is scraping - you will not rank highly.

If it is a narrow niche with not much good competition you may get away with a totally scraped site.
