Technically the PR patent only expired in 2019, but it's still one of the ranking factors.

I think you're conflating Google no longer giving out PR data with PR actually being outdated.

EDIT: I remember when my site's homepage hit a PR of 6 on the toolbar. That was almost as rewarding as having a newborn son.

I usually prefer same niche site from authority website with a do-follow link.
That gave me some really good results + referral traffic from the link site.

For eg - I have a travel blog and the link is from a famous travel influencers Website(She has a YT Channel too). It helped me to improve my SERP by a little margin, still a way to go for my top #3 spots!
