In New York City, the size of rats is close to full-grown cats. Also, I worked for the government before, and there is always a catch, such as they have people to fill that position, but it "looks good" to post that job[ They have people in mind for the job, trust me] as it shows the city it wants to take care of not desirable animals.
I am not saying don't apply, but I will tell you what they take out of your paycheck [Social security, medicare, pension, union, NYC, NY state tax, healthcare] plus, you have to live in NY, so take it from someone who knows about it as my wife also works in the federal government. They pay you that much because it's a headache to work there.
P.S. Sorry if I am a pessimist, as I think state jobs are suitable for benefits and retirement. I encourage everyone here to apply for that as you never know what your healthcare will cover, but you do have to realize it requires a lot of dealing with the "politics of workers," which can cause burnout.
