Is hashtags really a thing these days?

If you pick the right hashtags based on their difficulty (average likes, posts, et cetera), then yes, you can rank for some hashtags and definitely have very good results.

Hashtags work for me on Twitter. But unless your content interests the audience intended for that particular hashtag, you're wasting your time. User intent matters.

They work great for some sites to target/find the right content.
Instagram would be among the first.
Facebook, Twitter and Linkedin in a way lesser amount.
Redditors aren't using them.

Hashtags are still working good for Instagram.
If your account is relatively small, target smaller hashtags and don't overdo it.

What do you mean by big enough ? With 10k followers I had 3 posts who bring me 150 / 280 / 320 followers just with hashtags

On Twitter, hashtags seem to work for me. Sites that are scrapping seem to use them and normally get a backlink from it
