I need to learn local SEO: Where do I begin?

I'll have to do local SEO (Google Business Profile) for a company with close to a hundred locations and I don't know local SEO. I'll have to start studying: where do I begin?
Any advice or tip would also be appreciated.

Good advice. But before hiring some to perform a task, I like to have an understanding of what they are doing.

But as I said from my POV, this is about understanding + experience. Your experience is what will really make the difference.
Following just the basics through understanding will be plain "meh" (although for certain low competence queries, doing just 0+1 is better than plain 0, so they may work out).

Alright. So in these 15 years of doing SEO, you did not realize that local SEO is gaining importance and made no attempt to learn local SEO ? Now you have a client for local SEO and you are confused as to what to do ? In these 15 years of doing SEO, you have not networked even with a single person who does local SEO ? In today's cut throat business competition, it is no longer bigger eats smaller, it is now faster eats slower. So, by the time you decide as to what to do with that local SEO client, the client may move on to some other (local) SEO provider.
