I noticed that a website ranking well in my niche has split content into subpages. So instead of having one large page full of content with headings, the site has one main content page with subpages in tabs.
I will give an example using Bitcoin Price as a topic. Traditionally an SEO would write a 1,000+ word page to try to rank for the topic with headings such as "What is Bitcoin" and "Bitcoin Exchanges." Instead, my competitor is using a subpage structure:
The pages are linked together with tab links. Each page repeats the same general content on top and customized content below it. Overall the content is very thin, though.
Why do this? At least in my niche, the competitor is getting targeted links to each subpage instead of a bunch of links to one main page.
The advantage of this structure is that the links seem to be very evenly distributed between the subpages. The competitor is able to rank for "Bitcoin Price," "Bitcoin News," and "Bitcoin Exchanges" because the links are going straight to /price, /news, /exchanges etc.
I'm familiar with silo structure but have never seen it applied this way. Do you think this is a smart strategy?
