There are people on upwork charging 5k for landing copy so

It's important to know how to sell yourself and to say NO to lowballers.

And still you can hire phillipino content writter who nailed it for $200 or less monthly.

Most likely, the "content writer" took the insane amount of money and probably spent a few hundred dollars with an actual writer, and then used the rest to fund a website, using the keywords provided. You get free keywords, startup capital, and probably some money left over.

Worst experience. Maximum writers won't do it. But few still doing like this. It's unfair in this business world.

Try to avoid spending much for writing. It is okay if it is Book.

Such thing never happened with me.

I pay my freelance writers on a monthly basis for the whole work they done for me in a month. This gives me an ample time to check their work for plagiarism. If I find any content already existing in any website or published before me, I get back to them and ask them to edit that. I do not release pay for that piece of work until the copy is plagiarism free.

I must say, I have a very cordial relations with my freelance writers and extreme thing like the ones OP mentioned never happened with me.
