I can't find enough niche-relevant sites. Can I look for unrelated but Google-trusted sites?

Backlinks from irrelevant sources have less power than niche-relevant sources.

Yes, they do to a certain extent within reason.

You can get a pet site link for CBD because pets can take CBD for pain relief.
Getting a link from an escort agency to a site about baby strollers is not going to be a good move.

The punch power of keyword rankings is low compared to niche related backlinks, so unless you have niche related backlinks, make a link to a category related website.

Seriously though I have a new client who has a backlink profile that is pure spammy garbage, with things like this. It's more difficult working on a screwed up site than on a clean one.

Is there a way to clean up a site from this bad spammy links?

Creating backlinks from unrelated niche increases your website bounce rate and it hurts your ranking.

Yes, they work. I have experience of them working. If they would get you in trouble with Google in the future is what I don't know and can't say.
So I won't recommend your entire backlink profile to be populated by links from unrelated sites(i.e sites in totally different niches).

What matters most is how much said site(more importantly, page) is ranking on Google. Every page ranking on Google passes link juice irrespective of where the link leads to.

Absolutely. It's not realistic to have a majority of your links from niche relevant sites, especially if you're in a small-targeted niche. What is important is that the article and the topic of the article is related to your niche.

Almost every niche can be interrelated and has a certain connection. Just look at the different topics in the niche you are in and you'll find that for each topic there is a niche or several niches different from yours that are connected to that topic.

It's natural to have lots of unrelated niche backlinks.

If you do this for a lot of links, it can actually do harm to the website. But just a few links are ok to have.

Thanks for this. I also didn't know about this

You can increase organic traffic by sharing content using social signals if you don't any relevant links.

This problem is common in some rare niches. Only solution is to go for links from unrelated niches.
