Do backlinks from unrelated niches work?

It’s hard to stick to the white hat SEO rules when you see sites getting rewarded with spammy links. Ran into 2 sites yesterday who are on page one together with the dominant players in my niche. These are local service providers but have links from blogs from every country in the world. The kid who built those links even placed a link on his own site boasting about working for this client. It’s basically business suicide as it shows what shitty seo job he did…but then again it worked. Pretty frustrating. (Rant over)

You can do quality general blogs, It's a better alternative for unrelated niches.
Yes, I agree with this.. You can go for quality general blogs rather than choosing completely unrelated niche sites..

Though highly relevant sites are the best, you can go for relatable sites if you are having difficulty finding them. You can also relate your content to the context of sites.
There are also general niche sites. Leaving extremely unrelatable areas, you can opt for any site because they will somehow contribute to the SEO

Links from mixed niche sites works, but make sure that the articles were related to your keyword & site.

If you won't get related niche links, just broaden the searching for getting links. Always relevant link will boost your sites

Having a handful links from unrelated niches or general websites will certainly not harm. Just make sure you do not overdo them.

I believe it is possible to find out related sites from Google no matter how uncommon it is.

can I ask for your niche?

The websites that you shortlist must be from your own niche. Otherwise, it won't work. Moreover, even if you generate back-links from outside of your niche, they won't be of much value. More importantly, such back-links from unrelated websites will land you in trouble and get you penalized by Google Penguin
