Where to start with backlinks for a client?

I was approached yesterday by someone wanting help with their SEO. I have told them I can help with on page SEO but they want help with off page, specifically backlinks.

I have only had experience getting links for a blog I used to run and that pretty much involved getting in with other bloggers and networking. I don't know if the kinds of links I used to get are even allowed anymore (some were from link-up link party type things.)

I know you can get links if you post good enough content people want to link to it but again that involves relationship building and time. Guest blogging is another thing I could help with. But after that I'm lost. I wouldn't even know how to buy a backlink (and not get scammed.)

So, I'm wondering where to start with link building for this person. Or should I just give it a miss as I haven't really got a clue what I'm doing?

Any tips would be really appreciated.

No! Use it as a paid learning opportunity. At least that is what I do.

The first thing I would do is to research the backlinks that the successful competitors in the same niche have.
This will also give you an idea about how long the process going to take and how much money will be needed.

Get backlinks from guest posts and niche edits on real traffic sites. Before getting backlinks, check the site metrics ,traffic & age, and how frequently he posts articles and whether the articles are informative or sponsored. After analyzing the site, get backlinks from those sites. You can also check the reviews on the marketplace here and choose your service.
If your website is new then go with Guest post, niche edit or top editorial sites for 1 month.

You need Jr. VIP to post in Marketplace but you no need Jr. VIP to buy anything from marketplace.

You need a JR VIP membership to create your own marketplace thread to sell your services and to respond to Hire a freelance/ want to buy threads where you’d be selling something.

However to post on other members service threads and initiate interest in their service OR to post a hire a freelancer thread in search of someone you’d like to hire, any member can do that.

I really don't recommend someone do niche edits for someone else's sites. Especially if they are not an expert in the field. You are giving up a lot of control and trusting the other seller to do right by your client. What do you do when you find out the seller was using hacked sites? Imagine your client receiving an email "Hello, your website was advertised on my hacked site." Not something I would want to risk. Even sellers with years of a good reputation can take a shortcut or get caught doing something wrong.

You might want to consider looking up a video posted by <strong>loop line</strong> regarding finding local backlinks.

I'm assuming that your client is a local business.

If that's the case, then a loop line video tutorial on how to use ScrapeBox to create a local PBNs might do the trick.

But if your project involves building backlinks for a website with a national or even international customer base, I would suggest that you look into press release SEO.

I'm not talking about the junk press release SEO that most people talk about.

This usually involves stuffing all sorts of keywords into a spammy hunk of text and sending it over to a notification system that will try to get it published across a wide range of press release sites.

The links that you get from such a system is not really aren't really all that good.

Instead, I'm talking about newsworthy press releases.

So if your client actually has access to data that has a big impact on their industry, and you can somehow tie this data with trending topics or some sort of controversy, you might be able to get a lot of mainstream sites to link to your clients website.

This is not speculation.

This is exactly how OkCupid and Pornhub became the 800-pound gorillas in their respective fields.

If they can do it with in-house data, I'm sure you would have a fighting chance as well.

If you are thinking of buying backlinks, I understand your concern regarding getting scammed.

But usually you may get scammed in a way that you didn't expect.

The link seller might be legit but the problem is they may end up selling links to another person who doesn't play by the rules and they end up getting banned.

And guess what Google will do next?

That's right, they will try to investigate where this person is getting links and it can get really nasty, real quickly.
