There's really not much you can do if you just found them off Google and decided to do a custom deal.

Scumbags will be scumbags.

The best advice I can give you is to basically display the number game.

In other words, for every 100 deals you close at the back of your head, assume that a small percentage of that will turn out to be bum deals.

That's just the way things go.

The best way to protect yourself is to negotiate the best price and play the numbers game and move on.

But at the end of the day, it really all boils down to the quality of the backlink network you have established through your negotiations, and there will always be a few bad apples.
