Now Google can kill your affiliate site at any time, 7 years ago there were no algorithms that killed affiliate sites. In addition, the demand for affiliate sites has dropped significantly.

Yep, the fact that affiliates have become hated by google too. Amazon also doesn't need affiliates now.

And 7 years ago the amazon commissions were 8% for all products if your number of items sold was above the threshold.

You could build a $500-$1k/mo site in your sleep back then. Like 1 money article and 5 support articles with a few web 2 backlinks. Some expired tumblrs, 3 months and boom, $500/mo+

Now, even $500/mo takes so much effort with amazon.

The people still making money with it generally just run amazon until they get some traffic, then they do direct deals, but even then it's not really the big money it once was. Even if you can grow a site to $30k/mo, the amount of investment required for that now is just insane. What makes it worse is you can easily lose it all with the next update.

You are always dependent on some external service/3rd party when building your e-commerce business or a brand (read this - https://www.npr.org/2021/02/15/968116346/after-weeks-of-being-off-line-parler-finds-a-new-web-host).

Also, it's not that easy to create a brand/eCommerce store out of nothing. Supply chain, logistics, etc - lots of things to worry about if you go the physical product route.

Difficulty-wise, aff marketing is far easier than both of them. That's why affiliate marketing is perfect for a lot of internet marketers.

It's a super general question. What type of site? Health? Ecom? Info? Ads or affiliate? Your own products? direct deals?

It's too general.

It also depends on how much of the work you can do.

Can you write 5k words a day, every day for a year?

Can you do outreach yourself?

it's really hard to answer.

I wouldn't even attempt it to be honest.

It's a "how long is a piece of string" question.

The answer could be $5k, it could be $1k, it could be $100k.

I'd spend $100k in a heartbeat to build a $30k/mo site.

I'd spend $200k to make one.

I do other things though. I don't build affiliate sites. At least not with human content. AI on the other hand is a different matter.

Basicly, AMZ is pretty nice, at least in Germany. But you have to grow big enough, to get a product manager, you can talk to. That's mostly in the provision range of 10k€ / month

wow, sorry man for your bad experience. I am aff for 7+ years now, never promoted amazon products. Try to find boutique networks that will work for your success. they make money when you make money. Forget about whales

I’ll have to disagree here too. There are thousands of affiliate & leadgen sites out there banking hard since many years.

But of course it does no harm to have other income streams and not be 100% dependent on them.

Amazon affiliate for English speaking country is too competitive. For other countries, it's not the same difficulty and needs less *work* done.

You do have a point there. We have a recession coming, the USA has around 9% inflation and climbing - things are generally looking rough everywhere. Amazon cut commissions a few years ago and they are most definitely going to cut commissions again once people stop buying as many products. I expect this to happen soon.

And then you have the Google Updates, which can tank your website without any explanation if you get unlucky, even if you follow their "just post good content, bro" crap. Imagine getting a 90% drop on your first site and then getting a second one up just to see it tank 90% again.

The writing is on the wall. There are better ways to make money online and it's the perfect time to do so, before you get left with nothing overnight.

Yeah, but that's the fate of every SEO-based marketing strategy and not exclusive to affiliate.

These are mostly points, that can hit any business as well - perhaps not with comissions, but with energy-prices, supplier problems and so on.

IMO go with strong integrators like Rakuten Affiliate publishers or similar ones. Also, do the work for high-paying tickets of top brands.. doing traffic for e-commerce sites with 1-day cache or the sites that often break the campaigns in a shorter time please don't prefer or use it.

Long term cache period and long renewal of an individual campaign plays a vital role. and too try building continuous stories on a daily basis.. It really works.
