Now Google can kill your affiliate site at any time, 7 years ago there were no algorithms that killed affiliate sites. In addition, the demand for affiliate sites has dropped significantly.

Yep, the fact that affiliates have become hated by google too. Amazon also doesn't need affiliates now.
And 7 years ago the amazon commissions were 8% for all products if your number of items sold was above the threshold.
You could build a $500-$1k/mo site in your sleep back then. Like 1 money article and 5 support articles with a few web 2 backlinks. Some expired tumblrs, 3 months and boom, $500/mo+
Now, even $500/mo takes so much effort with amazon.
The people still making money with it generally just run amazon until they get some traffic, then they do direct deals, but even then it's not really the big money it once was. Even if you can grow a site to $30k/mo, the amount of investment required for that now is just insane. What makes it worse is you can easily lose it all with the next update.
