As for being a waste of time, well I'm not so sure about that but you could be right. I want to run a few ideas through it before I can it as a waste. It's complex but I'm going to give you a small report on what I've found.
Before you read any of it though I do recommend watching this small clip from "The Office". The first time I ever heard about this software was right here in this clip. I think I caught this episode during the writers strike...

So it was really hard to keep my composure while flying around... Seriously.
When you first start out in Second Life (which from now on will be reffered to as SL) you have to complete a series of tutorials, 4 to be exact. They basically show you how to move about the world and interact with objects. How to fly, how to drive, how to activate object menus and what not. After completing these simple tasks, you are given the keys to the city so to speak.
Upon entering the world you'll notice it's pretty vast. Zoom out of your map as far as you can to get an idea. Also when searching for anything notice the traffic. For your first mini tour of the place just visit the most populated place you can find.
You start of with $0 cash. The virtual world has it's own currency in the form of Linden (referred to as $L). If you decided to get a premium membership off the bat (not recommended) then you start out with money I guess but I wouldn't bother at this point. Just go in to get an idea of the traffic.
In response to the comment above, I think that anyone would tell you that using strictly black hat tactics is a waste. White or black a tactic is a tactic and you should be using all of yours.
Basically what your going to find here is that your strapped or broke. Everyone you see, anywhere, has spent real money buying something in SL. That much is guaranteed. How? Well you've already got that figured out by now... if not (or you where to lazy to download the program) here's why...
Linden converts into USD$ at a rate. All $L (fake money can be converted back into USD and be sent back to your paypal account).
Basically (as of now) $1 us dollar converts into $184 Linden dollars.
Now if your in SL in a populated place you'll notice that most of these places have all sorts of ways for you to make fake money. That's why there so popular and they get all the traffic. Of course the great thing here is that they have over 10 people in there trying to make fake money at all times. Most places pay users $75 linden dollars to complete a CPA offer through there "ATM free money machines)... $75 linden dollars is eqaul to 0.59 USD.

Oh you want to keep going? You mean I can advertise this as a job to thousands of people that WANT to do it all day? I think buying land isn't a half bad idea at this point.
I've also seen some awesome money made on landsales. That's just in two days of snooping around. They go for $1000 in most cases from what I've seen but they sell out to fast. Haven't had much of a chance to look into it but bet your ass that's what I'll be focusing on next. The high price land like that is like an old domain that had allot of traffic so think of it like that. You can buy land super cheap and make it valuable and re-sell it.
This report is a very basic outline of ideas. It would take a bit of work to get something going. You would need good background in graphic design, web design and a bit of 3d render to make a real killing so if you've got a bit of that paired with some marketing skills you could make out like a bandit. Luckily I have a good background in design and code. I also played allot of "Sims" and made items so this is a cake walk.
Oh and did I forget to mention the ewhores? I'm not a fan but if that's your cup of tea, then you're in luck. It's pretty much OK to do whatever you want. Your niche is good to go there. I don't care how sick it is you can market it... and do it successfully. It's much to vast to go into but just to give you a general idea, you can do what most of these people do. Make an attractive AV and get paid to escort or whatever. Ya that's a great way to get people to scrap you some fake internet money that you can later convert to usd.. about enough to get you a pop. I could be wrong here but I doubt it pays crap. I hear some people get guys to sign up for their cam offers but honestly who falls for that these days? Not worth it. So what do you do with all these horny men lingering in the sex clubs on SL? Build your own. You can charge people whatever you want and you can do whatever you want. The money is in land. Build a place, get some aff offers in for your visitors to sign up for. Chances are they already used thier credit card or paypal to buy that goofy avatat thier sporting. Pay them fake money or offer them "girls" give them incentive.. Be creative. As I said it's to vast but your wheels have to be turning by now. You'll likely have 1 competitor but hey it's no fun with out competition.
The user base is not just growing steadily... much faster. Go look at how many active users they have.
Before I make any kind of moves I'm going to research a bit more. I'll continue to update this thread with anything new I find if anyone is interested.
