How do sites stop visitors from going back to serps?

Focus on improving these metrics...

Bounce Rate, Dwell Time, and Average Time On Page.

How?

• "Hook" the reader in the first couple of hundred words
• Fulfill the user´s search intent
• Improve your page loading time
• Optimize the site´s navigation
• Make sure your site is fully responsive
• Make content appealing to the readers
• Avoid using popups
• Go easy on ads
• Focus on optimizing your site´s internal link structure
• Designing and publishing a custom 404 page will go a long way

I am sure there is much more stuff you can focus on but this is a very basic (but strong) list of items you can focus on that will most likely help reduce bounce rate and increase your site´s dwell time and average time on page.

I've observed that sometimes they seem to load a number of pages in the history and if you hold the back button down there are many pages in the history after only clicking one link. I'm not sure how they achieve this.

If you have great content that answers their questions they won't want to go back to the SERP. You shouldn't worry too much about preventing them from going back, because either way they would still find their way there.

Yup I saw some sites doing that a lot nowadays and they will get f**ked for that.
