always depends on the personal needs, I would say, for the most peoples "old" hardware is still enough.

As soon as it works yeah, but laptop is not long-term. I had one too like 10 years ago, its very hard to clean as it is very packed together. In summer when it was like 30C° + I couldnt play any game for longer than half hour before it shut down due to temperature safety, I even had that air cooler and all but didn't help. Also because it was so hot, it was slow too because those components like CPU and GPU runs on lower performance so they wont heat so much. Now im using it only as 1TB Hard Drive

Well laptop is very temporary, 5 years max and its useless. Advantage of desktop is that you can maintain it by yourself, laptop is harder to disassemble and even harder to assemble back. I have 8 year old desktop PC, bought new GPU, +8GB RAM (16 total), SSD disk, Power supply and its like new. I clean it often and replace thermal paste both on CPU and GPU. This way it can go for long time and if some component fails you can easily replace it

It all comes down to what you use it for and what type of laptop you buy, sure if you buy a consumer laptop it will eventually break down, thats why you always buy a workstation laptop.

I had my latest laptop for years now (bought it 2016 i think), no problems at all. It is a HP ZBook 17 G3 Mobile Workstation that costs a bit more than a consumer laptop upfront, but in the long run, it is cheap and very reliable. I`ve built computers since 1995 and had my share of bad computers to .. =)

Yeah if you can afford a new one after this one broke then it's fine I had my PSU broken few months ago and luckily I only had to buy a new one for like 60-70 and not require much skill to do by yourself

Since it is the tool I depend on to bring in my money, it is a fair price to pay. Ask a carpenter if he buys cheap stuff in his business or if he buys quality tools that he can rely on.

I just wanted to clarify why one should go for quality over a consumer grade laptop. A lot of members in here does not understand the difference. But sure if money is tight it might be hard to pay that money upfront for a laptop. It also comes down to priorities in life, I for example do not have a car that draining my money, I chose to not spend money on that and a lot of other stuff .. =) .. But I understand your point, no worries.
