Try going through the Journey section here on BHW. When you pick just the SEO-related projects, you will see some people deliberately missing link building (because they just don't want an extra "headache"). But the sad part is, that you can't really skip link building. It's not a love/hate thing. Either you make more money and gain an increased traffic volume or you don't.
My reasoning for building links: I generally like starting sites on an expired or auctioned domain. Even if it only has a few good backlinks, that's good enough for the start. It just makes the indexing and ranking a bit faster.
And if I do start on a new domain, I target low competition topics (a group of keywords), and then I start building links when I have around 100 articles. Now, you may ask that why not just keep targeting low competition keywords and publish a lot of content rather than spending $$$ on links? Well, the biggest issue when targeting low competition keywords is that your keywords will be found out by others as well.
Understand this scenario: Let's say you are ranking for 10 x Keywords with minimal competition and they drive around 1k page views to your website. If a competitor of yours with a bunch of good links finds out these keywords and he isn't already targeting those then, he might go after these keywords and is pretty sure to outrank you (because you went the "whitehat-way" and built no links). So, it's important to build a "moat" around your niche site.
And that "moat" is link building.
Another thing is, When you build a link to one page, all the other interlinked pages also get a ranking boost, and it (links) has a very exponential effect on the overall site if the links are good.
What's your reasoning behind link building?
