Try going through the Journey section here on BHW. When you pick just the SEO-related projects, you will see some people deliberately missing link building (because they just don't want an extra "headache"). But the sad part is, that you can't really skip link building. It's not a love/hate thing. Either you make more money and gain an increased traffic volume or you don't.

My reasoning for building links: I generally like starting sites on an expired or auctioned domain. Even if it only has a few good backlinks, that's good enough for the start. It just makes the indexing and ranking a bit faster.

And if I do start on a new domain, I target low competition topics (a group of keywords), and then I start building links when I have around 100 articles. Now, you may ask that why not just keep targeting low competition keywords and publish a lot of content rather than spending $$$ on links? Well, the biggest issue when targeting low competition keywords is that your keywords will be found out by others as well.

Understand this scenario: Let's say you are ranking for 10 x Keywords with minimal competition and they drive around 1k page views to your website. If a competitor of yours with a bunch of good links finds out these keywords and he isn't already targeting those then, he might go after these keywords and is pretty sure to outrank you (because you went the "whitehat-way" and built no links). So, it's important to build a "moat" around your niche site.

And that "moat" is link building.

Another thing is, When you build a link to one page, all the other interlinked pages also get a ranking boost, and it (links) has a very exponential effect on the overall site if the links are good.

What's your reasoning behind link building?

I'm confused when someone ask me why do I need links on a seo forum. It is obvious, no links - low traffic, few $$

When anyone can buy the same backlinks as you, it’s not really a moat. Say you build ten links to a page. Theoretically, a competitor can build 11 and outrank you anyway.

Having links might keep some competitors away but if someone really wants to rank for the same keywords as you, you can‘t really avoid it.

Links are just part of the equation. Check any SERP and you’ll see that the site with the most links doesn’t always rank #1.

You can’t really avoid competition. Someone else can always spend more money on better content or more money on links. If you build 10 links, someone else will build 20. If you have 100 articles on a topic, a competitor can write 200.

Unless you spend tens of thousands of dollars, it’s hard to have a moat. Even then, all you’re doing is reducing the competition. Not eliminating it.

A surprisingly large number of people have a lot of money to throw at websites. Just look at the recent spike in multiples. People are sometimes paying 60X multiples to buy sites. It’s insane.

I build sites on strong domains and don't build any links, I just steal all the keywords from the little guys and outrank them. The content has to be on point though. This is why you need to build links, sooner or later someone is going to outrank you otherwise. Unless you have, say a 10 year old website with a ton of content (topical relevancy), then links won't be enough to outrank you.

Going for bigger keywords is a different form of SEO all together. You need authority and links from the get-go. Even if you have a Dr 50 domain, you're not ranking for bigger keywords like that. You will need a proper SEO strategy to rank that specific page. Lots of supporting content and links.

Just look at people ranking for smaller and bigger keywords, and you will see how links fit into the picture.

A backlink is created when an external website links to your site. This means that they trust the site enough to do the favor of taking some time writing text about you, and then write the HTML code to generate a backlink for your site and make it on the internet to be shared with their valued viewers. The process of convincing bloggers, news websites experts, influencers, and bloggers to provide you with backlinks is among the most effective strategies for marketing you can employ in addition to the effort involved in convincing them, it's completely cost-free!

Furthermore to that, link building can provide significant benefits to marketing that can help your business or website to flourish. If you are planning to partner together with an external SEO agency, or recruit an expert in search marketing for your staff or plan to build your own SEO skills must be aware of what link building is all about.

Majestic is a necessary set that includes SEO software tools that help you research, plan and track links building strategies. This article will show how to create backlinks and the benefits they provide to your site and the way Majestic can provide Link Intelligence that will help you analyze your market and beat your competition.

We'll cover:

  • A quick link building procedure
  • What are the benefits of quality backlinks to your website
  • Why are backlinks so important for Google's algorithm?
  • What is Majestic charts the internet
  • How do you assess the potential for backlinks
  • The most well-known tools within the Majestic toolbox
  • How do you obtain quality backlinks

Simple link building procedure

Backlinks may happen by accident - someone stumbles across your website and thinks , 'wow my readers would love this' and shares the link with them. It's wonderful when that occurs, but it isn't often. If you wait around for these types of backlinks in the future, you'll get only just a tiny amount - barely enough to have any impact on the search engine results.

It's true that you have to actively look for them and convince them to provide backlinks. It is broken down into five simple steps:

  • Find markets that are relevant and could provide backlinks
  • Know what your competitors are linking to building strategies
  • Find high-quality backlink prospects you can reach out to
  • Give compelling reasons to other websites to offer you backlinks
  • Check backlinks for backlinks, analyze results , and find out how you can better ask in the future.

Have you ever been doing keyword research, you’re checking the 1st page for a keyword, and the site that’s ranking #1-3 has moderately high metrics? Then you notice that site is yours from an article you wrote like a year ago.

That’s why I build them, because that = conversions, clicks, & ad impressions.

A lot of people don't understand the different quality of backlinks and those who buy often end up buying the cheapest option and undoing the god work they have done with decent onpage, decent content etc etc.

When anyone can buy the same backlinks as you, it’s not really a moat. Say you build ten links to a page. Theoretically, a competitor can build 11 and outrank you anyway.

It doesn't work like that. When I was heavy on seo there was a 7 pages website with few links ranked #1 for my best keyword. I tried everything. Better website, more and stronger links, keyword domain, no keyword domain etc but I wasn't able to outrank it. I spent a lot of money as this keyword was binging me 2k per month being ranked below #2.

Jasper, is that you?

That's exactly my point. It doesn't work like that. That's why I said "theoretically". Building links doesn't guarantee #1. If it did, results could be guaranteed. Based on what you've said, I'm almost certain that you had an on page issue keeping you from ranking #1.

Like I said, links are just a part of the equation. The site that has the maximum number of links isn't always #1.

Absolutely, you are right. But if it is a part of the equation, then what's the issue in actually focusing on it?

BTW, You are comments are very insightful :)

I can’t speak for others but I don’t focus on it because I have too many sites and too many pages.

I focus mostly on keyword research so I don’t really need links to rank.

Good links are expensive. Even building just a few links each month gets really expensive once you start to scale.

I’m not against building links by any means. I buy them occasionally if I need a boost.

But I’d say that links are a very very small part of my strategy. I easily spend 10-15 times more on content.

Links are much like money. Your life is definitely not solely about money. Money is not everything. But without money life is nothing.

Damn! Links are money.

links = money
life ≠ money
money ≠ life
life = money
links = money

That's what I got from it. Yea I'm bored.

Nonono...

Given: link ≈ money

Because:
money ≠ life
life > money
life w/o money =

So that:
SEO w/o link =

I typically start out with sites that are brand new, but for my own companies. Links, to me, help build a trust factor and I have gotten high DA links from niche relevant authority sites.

My main business is real estate sales. When I started doing SEO for this site, I would search for the address of my listings I used to be on page 3-4 of the google even though I had a domain that was close to 20 years old at that point and had some natural links from large brokerages we used to work for and such. I was being beat by much newer sites. I did targetted link building (seeing what my competitors had and building that or better) and eventually got to the top half of page 1. So for me, link building has increased my rank & authority. During that time all I did was link building, no on-page stuff, and no article building. I've done that stuff since, even going after low competition phrases for articles that brought in 1k views a month.

Have a few other companies I need to do that with now, if only they were easier to figure out the competition.

Just bumping to see more people with reasonings.

Building backlinks is an important part of search engine optimization (SEO) as they help to improve website visibility and rankings in search engines. Backlinks are links from other websites that link back to your website, and are seen as a "vote" of confidence from the referring website. This helps to build trust and authority with search engines, as well as helping to increase website traffic.
