Yes it is. Especially in competitive niches.
People usually think that it's an easy giveaway of a PBN but it's not really the case.
If you can track the progress in public tools so can everyone else.
You have to make the calculation of what is worth to you more.
Giving one site super boost or two sites just a great boost for example.

how do I choose/find the best OBLs to link to (other than my money site) making sure my money site get's the best link juice without being detected and without unnecessarily boosting competitor sites?

Are you referring to authority sites linking?
First of all, don't do Wikipedia.
Authority sites in your niche should be well known but also do not compete for the same keywords. They usually have lot of traffic, links, high stats like DR and pop up for searches all over the place.

yes, that's what I mean. I really struggle with deciding what OBLs to choose so it doesn't affect the ranking of my money site and also doesn't look like an obvious PBL where there are inks to high DR sites and then one link to my money site.

I don't know any resource that covers this topic specifically.
It is quite simple though. When you mention a fact, event etc you can cite a source.
This source should ideally not be your competitor, be popular in your niche and cover the pic well. Attributes mentioned before apply.

Diminishing returns is like running against the wind. You keep pushing forward harder and harder but wind is getting stronger and stronger so the end result is that you end up going backwards.
PROS:
- power / juice to the first linking page
- anchor text diversity of individual pages
CONS:
- diminishing returns
- waste of time waiting for results
- potential flag because of oblivious sign of "connection" between websites
VERDICT: Not recommended!

This is what is happening by default if you build PBN links by publishing homepage posts.
Your post sits on the homepage but the post page itself also gets indexed so link comes from inner page as well.
This is OK as homepage will get priority.
However... if you push this further and keep building links from inner pages you will once again encounter diminishing returns.
Homepage (or the page engines discovered first) link will count fully and only thing that will count from inner pages is anchor text. So you can use it for diversity.

This can be quite effective if you do it in moderation, actually. Especially if the PBN pages are powered by direct backlinks.
I wouldn't do more than 5 pages personally.

- anchor text diversity of individual pages
CONS:
- potential flag because of oblivious sign of "connection" between websites
- potential diminishing returns but I haven't encounters them with all cases, it's tricky
VERDICT: OK with moderation

It means you are in charge of the PBN so you can decide what anchor to use. You can diversify your anchors according to your needs.
As you can see I highlighted this point for all scenarios.

In second scenario you only link to each money site 1x from each PBN unit.
In this case each anchor text from each PBN unit will help with diversity, yes.

I have a question from you. Suppose you have 30 blogs that gets updated every 2-3 months. You write articles on them about different apps (take apps as broad niche as exmaple). Now you have 4-5 money sites that covers a specific app and you build money sites around them. Now what will you do?
1. Will you write 5 articles and publish them on different dates and link to money sites.
2. Or will you link to only one money site and for other money sites you will create another PBN.
