"What Do You Do?" - What Do You Say To That?

haha, this is an interesting question that i'm asked a lot. Everytime just ends up me explaining that I do things that they could never do or even begin to understand.

Of course this confuses them even further causing more intrigue, which was my goal in the first place. :)

Lol, ya I usually just try to confuse them and get a topic change haha.

Its not like I dont like talking about it, but sometimes I hate trying to explain something others may never understand.

Yeah, I have the same problem and have found that "Internet Marketer", "Internet Adminsitrator" or "Internet Security Consultant" pretty much does the trick.

They are afraid to ask further because they will have to show that they have no idea what you are talking about and if they ask about "Internet Security Consultant", you can just tell them that you have a non-disclosure agreement which prohibits you from discussing the job.

Haha I love the NDA thing. I should definitely try that more often.

A Oral Hygienist Smitty??
Haven't you heard of Colgates and a tooth brush?

I believe you meant Colgate. No S :) I don't use that shit, have
you ever looked at the damn ingredients? I'm not a big fluoride man,
that shit is toxic and in no way helps teeth.

By the way my teeth are immaculate, never had a cavity in all my
life. I believe I owe that to actually avoiding fluoride all my life.

But this was my 6 month visit...

I once got laid telling a chick I was on the Olympic synchronized swimming team....she was pretty dumb and I was pretty drunk at the time.

Lol touche my friend.

I used professional snowboarder from BC, haha that one worked
for me one night :)

I actually do work as a Computer Programmer (part time), and I think that is worse than Internet Marketer. "You work in computers, mine is ... blah blah blah" I hate going to someone's house for a party only to have to look at their computer.

I used to tell people that I made money off the Internet, but that got me those, if you can do it, I can do it people. I just say I work in Online Real Estate, and most people just look puzzled and move on.

i actually got this asked by a 12 year old niece a few days ago.
i told her i advertise products/services on the internet, and the more money i make for those companies, they more they pay me.
she went "ohh ok............" and left... lol

Hehe, I get asked all the time since Im always at home. Most of the brazilians I know here in London do some really menial jobs, and they see this guy driving a bmw all day long doing nothing but staring at a couple of screens all day. The thing is, If I say Internet Marketer, they just ask me back so what is it?...then I have to tell them I shouldng even begin to explain otherwise their heads are gonna spin big time lol .... I like though, I have some friends of mine come to my house and they just see dreamweaver loaded on my screen with all this html code and shit, they just go "man, how can you understand all this crap?" and I go, "ah, Im just programming some landing pages"...hmm whats a landing page? lol

Haha, I hear ya.

You can't say one thing without it leading into another, "Well what is that?"

Which is the main reason I created this thread.

If someone has a one liner that can explain it all and shut people up
I'm am all ears. I might even drop you 5 bucks if its a good one.

It's amazing how nosey folks can be. Even family. We're surrounded by name-dropping, title throwing, business card shoving egomaniacs, so my being a "Housewife" brings the whole Career Interrogation thang to a screeching halt. (hehehe)

On the plus side, I am written off as a GoldDigger in 30 seconds flat, and my husband is enjoying his newfound "SugaDaddy" status...LOL...

On the negative side --- wait, I haven't quite found it yet. I fly under everybody's radar and thats just the way I like it! Immediate family members have said this about me: "She's pretty active with the PTA and plays around with that website they have". (They only know about one website)

Nothing to see here. Move along. ;->

Let em talk... it will be even funnier to hear what they have to say when you are making 100k per month :)

If anyone asks, just tell them, "sorry, that's classified information".

Ha, I've tried the whole "If I told you I'd have to kill you" line. It just doesn't seem to satisfy like it used to.

O.K., tell them you own one of those Mexican "donkey show" porno sites. That ought to shut 'em up.:D

Haha, I have told people I peddle porn on the net and it usually does shut them up.

Hahaha...Smitty, we'll be just like those folks in the "Millionaire Next Door" --- I'll be sporting the coolest 10yr old pick-up and nobody would ever suspect we had it like that. Something tells me Uptownbulker knows quite a few folks in that category of "Normal folks with Extraordinary wealth". I have every intention of becoming one of them.

Like I said before: Nothing to see here. Move along. ;)

There you go. I will just tell everyone my wife has a webcam show she does every night ...

Or you could always just go with the truth:
"I pretend to be a girl, and have cyber sex with men for money ... "

That would really shut them up :D

You guys are all good with coming up with creative ways to explain what you do. I usually go with "I'm a Web Property Developer" because it's an easy metaphor to expand on when they ask the follow up question, "what's that mean?"

I quickly say I build sites like a property developer builds homes or strip malls and then I either collect ongoing revenue from the site--think of it like rent--or I sell the site once it's completed.

They'll still have no clue what I actually do, but that's a fast answer and usually leaves them thinking they understand well enough. I rarely get more questions beyond that point, I think because I make it sound so boring they don't want to know if they could do it too :)

I like the Web Property Developer idea... that is pretty slick.

But I know that would just spring more questions.

I guess I should just tell people, "Don't worry about it."
Or I could take the jackass route and say, "Sorry its way
over your head." But of course, I'm not a mean guy so
that probably wouldn't work out for me too well.

I will continue my search.

2 answers:

1. Bum and guard of my mom's expat house.
2. sell stuff online as a middleman or broker ( AM)
3. sell stuff online with the perks of traveling/living anywhere I really want to.

Yah, I've said Affiliate marketing a lot but again it spurred questions of course.

Usually when I say I help companies sell their products for a commission that usually ends the convo.
