Guys, I have an SEO consultancy that also produces websites for clients.
I've noticed that my competitors are putting ******** backlinks in their customer's footer.
I wonder if it's worth it, and what's the chance of taking a punishment?

I'm surprised anyone is doing that still.

The value is negligible as to SEO but you may, via an extreme accidental click by a visitor, get some traffic.

Part of my sales pitch against my competitors is to explain to your potential clients that you do not dilute the value of your web designs with links to your service.

IMO site wide links are a no-no no matter where it is.

In my area and niche site-wide links are the only links people rank with.
What's wrong there?

idk for what reason and per which experience or case studies people are recommending to avoid such links,
I've never had or seen a website that had any problem using footer/sidebar or similar links,

it's quite the opposite, getting such a link from a legit website can pass as much link juice as a homepage one,
there are many websites in different niche ranking just by using/renting or simply exchanging such links

We used to do it but stopped in 2014 or so as the value was liquidated to not worth anything SEO wise.
well, I was not into SEO at that time for sure, but what I can assure is that footer links in my casework like a charm,
I have a PBN website with a couple of them on their own and it's making a huge impact on every domain I link to

I have seen a few webmasters interlinking between their websites in same niche with success. Not sure about outside of that as last links on page pass least juice IMO.

even if they are follow links?

what is *** ?
follow links, por for some reason it was sensed when I posted it.

may be 1 link will generate more links
Do you mean putting a link on the homepage in footer only?

Higly unethical move, it was popular back in the beginning of 2000, nowadays only newbies do this. Better to charge more, and buy good links instead.

It MAY skyrocket ranking for x amount of time, but inevitably get shot to the abyss.. many times it will never rank at all.

It's a churn and burn tactic at best.
