Best backlinking method for WP site

Hello,

I have a WP website for which I optimized the on-page SEO, now I started working on the off-page SEO. And I'm wondering what is the best method. Pointing my backlinks towards the category pages, or the articles?
I'm basically wondering if if I point backlinks towards an article, will it have a weaker incidence on the rest of the website? And if I point my backlinks towards a category pages, will it have a weak incidence on the articles themselves?

What do you mean by this? Could you share an example?

Like to put a link to a targeted article in the footer of every page on the website?

don't forget about pointing generic backlinks to your homepage. take a look your top competitor and see how they have done it. most backlinks should be towards your homepage. exact match backlinks can be used towards your articles.

For off-page SEO, my preferred strategy is guest blogging since it is completely results-oriented.
