I see many seo-related sites advocating building 10-15 backlinks in first month to a new site (mostly to homepage) to stay on the "safe" site to avoid Spiky growth syndrome..

However, how is 10-15 backlinks (1500% increase in backlinks for a new domain) anything but unnatural?

How typical is it for 10 site owners to decide to link to a new site that has no previous profile unless you're donald trump?

Wouldn't hitting it with a single high quality link and then waiting for that to kick in before building more be more prudent and probably more effective?

New domains/new backlinks profiles are the most subject to scrutiny. Ive had this happen to me over and over again because of lack of patience.

I don't put in a single backlink, till the site has some trickle of organic traffic. After that, the stakes are all to play for!

You can create 10-15 backlinks if you post 2-3 articles per day and some of them rank on page 1. This is an indicator that you have some exposure in SERPs and people notice you. Apart from that, you can create many backlinks if you have huge referral traffic from social media or press releases. If you don't have organic traffic, social media presence, and rankings, then it's better not to create much backlinks. If you're at level 0, then create only 1-2 extremely good quality backlinks, and wait for your rankings to improve.

A few social signals, then 2-3 links to start, let the site settle and index etc.

i send much more in the first month and it works fine. never had any issues with that.
think of it, if you make 1 single post that goes viral you might get 1000s of links naturally.
i.e. you post something on facebook or reddit that gets lots of attention, then it doesn't matter if the domain is new or old.
its not out of the ordinary and there is no penalty for getting links too fast.
all you do when going slow is that it takes you longer to see results...

How much referring domains you are doing monthly at beginning?

I personally send 13 links to my website, when it was completely new. I did it because I have published 58 articles in the first month. I would say that if you are going to publish 50-60 articles in a month you can get 10-15 links for sure.

But those links should be quality maintained no irrelevant links.

Best of luck

I think 1-2 backlinks is good for the Website
Personally, for my websites
I always start making backlinks from 3rd month

Do not build any links at start but after a few months you can gradually start building relevant links

those who voted 100+ links on a brand new domain. representing a very spiky 10000% increase in links against the patent and link schemes guidelines... did these projects every really take off? and the ones that bypassed the filters....are they still ranking very well 6 months later?

ridiculous -a good website can gater tons of links in 30 days. - a great idea with cood content and a great seo person - who knows. It depends on who you compete against ..I know sites with 5 million links- I bet most PAID for .

SEO and patience is a good blend.
Do as any normal business would.
Press release + all your SM profiles.
Wait until indexed - then start building further links.

Since it is a new domain avoid build plenty of links in a short period of time. You can build 10 - 15 links monthly make sure it is high quality, niche relevant + Social shares.
