Is IG post boosting really worth it?

If you boost it in the right hashtags, hashtags with a certain volume and if the post stick there it may be worth.

In theory. I've heard stories of people spending $50,$100 and gaining only 30,40 followers IMO you can do more by follow for follow method without spending that much.

Its doable but you need to target a specfic audience and its even possible to target tier 1, 2 or 3 audience by country (geolocation) and other metrics.

With Instagram, hashtags are your best friend. I'd test a few different sets (try bigger hashtags and more niched-down hashtags), but it can definitely be worth it. Like any other form of paid ads it just comes down to testing, finding something that works then scaling up

Hashtags in my experience work only when you grow your account to some extent. For example my accounts with 500-1000 followers are getting low hashtag search volume. On the other hand with my other accounts 4000,5000+ the volume skyrockets.

Broad question but I think it comes down to the content you are promoting. I think people try to boost posts with a massive attraction interest when natural engagement/conversions need a more p2p personal approach imo. If you are a local foodtruck, running ads to your local city.. with good content I think it can 100% be worth it. But if you are a service/product provider It needs to be combined with a few other things. To a degree you have to research your niche, find the big guys, see how they structure content, and then start targeting the audience. I've always had good luck with boosting based on current followers, meaning people who dont follow me, with a high chance of interest of my niche, will see my content/ad based on the core person who does follow me. For one niche I run $10/days 5 days week and reach an additional 20k accounts a month, and it brings in conversions covering well over the cost per sale. (Average sale $300)

Boosting the post is mainly to get you engagement and brand visibility. If you're a content creator and your post resonates with people they'll for sure give you a follow. Not all niches are going to get a follow though. If you're boosting a product from your store then it's unlikely that you're going to get a lot of follows.

Personally found Pinterest's boosting/promoting option seems to give more value for the same cost

Boosting posts will get you a lot of likes but rarely any followers until and unless you've some form of CTA in the caption or really creative content that people fall in love with.
But if you're only looking for followers, you can try experimenting with different post types(videos that say follow me somewhere midway) that are so good that the viewers would want to watch more of.
Keep your account ready with a lot of similar videos when the viewer arrives. If he likes what he sees, the chances of him following you are way higher than from some ad-like text post.
