Two days ago in the middle of the night I watched a video of crypto chico talking about a new NFT play on eth network. They are selling TLD as NFTs, so you will be the owner and you can create Subdomains on these TLDs and rent/sell them. Without much more research I FOMOed in buying one of the TLDs, which was a pain in the ass, because it was my first NFT buy. I tried to get .insurance, .lawyer or .dentist but they were already gone. I managed to get a similar one as the ones mentioned. It cost me about 150$ including eth gas.
Next day I started to do some more research. I joined all their social media, asked some questions to the developers and read their publishings.
So what I have found out about is this:
- this is very early, they went live only a few days ago
- as of now you can't do anything with these TLD NFTs, not even create Subdomains
- they are working on DNS resolvers, their roadmap says Q2 2022
- when they have their DNS resolvers, These TLDs can be used, BUT they are not native to browsers... And that is my biggest concern with it
I asked the developers in their discord channel about browser implementation. They say their goal is to get their DNS resolvers implemented into Webbrowsers but their first step is making an chrome extension. They also pointed to their team, as one of their members is the former CTO of GoDaddy. Which sounds nice, but I don't know how much he is actually involved with it.
What do you guys think about TLD NFTs and this project particularly? Their name is decentraweb.
In my opinion these TLDs won't be worth anything until Google will implement them into chrome. And that will probably not happen very soon if at all. But if by some miracle it happens, I can create and sell similar Subdomains like miami.dentist or divorce.lawyer , so it is a long-term gamble for me and I am not unhappy with the buy so far. Other NFT projects didn't interest me much, because they are just expensive jpegs IMHO.
