I have always found it negative to buy fake followers, they lower engagement and therefore decrease the chance of ending up in an explorer.

The term 'fake followers' is too vague to talk about the impact they could have on your account as they come in different categories.

Egg accounts with spammy looking usernames and zero posts.
Half-baked profiles with 10k following and 4 followers.
Fully profiled inactive accounts.
Fully profiled active accounts with some following, followers and posts.

If you have got the latter, you're safe and it will only mess with your engagement rate but if they're really crappy, that could affect your account tremendously in terms of reach as well.

The way the algorithm works is that it will recommend and suggest your content to people with similar interests and what they engage with. If this engagement is all over the place and you have followers making erratic actions across a variety of different posts its not helping at all for your natural growth. For you account numbers yes it helps and I have seen many of my clients get great success, but if you are like 90% fake you will get no engagement naturally or have any chance of appearing in your market or niche because its skewed the algorithm too much.

I've analyzed plenty of USA instagram influencers, most of them is Full of fake followers of all type, I guess they do that for build "social proof" then they fix everything with giveaways and sponsored of various kinds
